This is my third piece experimenting with this kind of style. Here I still began with a calligraphy liquid ink drawing of the subject imposed in the paper texture background (same as the others), but I brought in much more of the texturing "special effect" that I have also been experimenting recently. My goal was really to give the impression of the figure rising out of the paper, or perhaps stamped into the paper, in a bas relief kind of contour.

As with the other pieces in this style, I'm obsessed with the idea that matter and form are not "things" in and of themselves, but mere distortions and contours formed from the background material in which they exist.

Technical Details:

Painted with a Wacom Tablet using Corel Painter 11.

The figure is painted entirely using the Liquid Ink Calligraphy / Depth Flat brushes, with four ink colors applied on separate layers and overlayed.

The background is a stock paper texture purchased by me from dreamtime stock images.

After doing the initial draw with ink, I used a large number of special manipulation effects, including: impasto depth manipulation effects, distortion (pinch, bulge), photo effects (dodge and burn), and surface effects ("add texture" using image luminosity).

If you want to see the original paint, prior to adding the texture and manipulation and effects, it is here:

damnnn you have a good eye for cell shading, but it has a nice sense of flow.

Thanks... I actually came across the whole concept of flat coloring / cell shading accidentally, while playing with calligraphy brush portrait drawings when I first got my tablet. It was only later that I learned that what I was doing was even CALLED "cell shading" or "flat coloring", interestingly enough. I've enjoyed combining that technique with my texture manipulations.

Someone in some group asked for it. *shrug* I don't argue.
