EPIDEXIPTERYX HUI
"Hu Yaoming's Display Feather"
Zhang et al., 2008
Length: 25cm (10 in) -- not including tail feathers
Weight: 164g (5.7 oz)
Location: Inner Mongolia, China
Era: Kimmeridgian age, upper Jurassic (152 million years ago)

Classification:
Dinosauria
Saurischia
Theropoda
Tetanurae
Avetheropoda
Coelurosauria
Maniraptoriformes
Maniraptora
Aviremigia
Paraves
Avialae
Scansoriopterygidae

Notes:
Epidexipteryx, along with its close relative Scansoriopteryx, are unique among theropods for their hand structure--in most theropods, the second digit is the longest, but in the Scansoriopterygids, the third is by far the longest. Because of this and a slew of other unusual features, such as their forward pointing pubic bones and Scansoriopteryx's long tail, many paleontologists disagree with the common assertion that they are primitive members of Avialae, suggesting they fall down the dinosaur family tree somewhere more primitive.

Interesting, I hadn't thought that Epidexipteryx might be a bird. Do we have much evidence?

honestly, the relationships of the scansoriopterygids is so in flux that i really am not sure it's a bird at all.

I have to ask; I like the picture don't get me wrong but... did this guy have 6 fingers?
Heytomemeimhome's avatar
Yes like all minoraptorians....

No I got confused because the shot made it look like the guys has 6 fingers on one hand, instead of three on each hand.

three--both hands are visible and right next to each other from our point of view.

O.k. because it looks really confusing from this perspective.

Nicely designed. The colors you picked worked very well.
