HAH. Last of the cleanups. Breeding time shall ensue, after I've fried my brain with plant science again.

Lolo's arrival at Brazen Fields, an event dampened by the circumstance of her retirement, was nevertheless well anticipated. Veridical's offspring had proven to be phenomenal producers as well as racers, and this one just might have been the most brilliant of them all: what could we expect from her foals, then?

The incident with Glitter and Cal still fresh in our minds, there were quite a few staff members on hand to watch as Lolo was turned out with the mare band for the first time. As expected, the first thing she did was stretch her legs, galloping wildly up and down the fences and drawing all sorts of attention to herself from the other horses. Acute whistled from an adjacent paddock.

Veridical approached her daughter first, and the two had an amiable reunion, snuffling and nibbling. It was when Glitter cantered up to the new arrival that we held our breath.

The two young mares arched their necks and sniffed each other's muzzles. Then Lolo gave a shriek, stamped her left forehoof once, and backed off warily.

Over the next few days, the tense introduction became a most unlikely alliance, and then a friendship. Each was a stubbornly independent mare, but their manners were different, and complementary; from the very top of the band hierarchy, Glitter was a benevolent leader, her only acts of aggression coming in the face of a challenge. Lolo became her general, her police force. The horse that made sure such challenges came few and far between.

And best of all, Veridical, who had been sagging slightly in the face of her dethroning, seemed to take heart in the appointment of one of her own brood to Glitter's right hoof. When Lolo wasn't playing silly games with the lead mare or chasing off a challenger, she was getting to know her mother and her sisters, the vibrant painted band careening recklessly over seas of green.
