The Predecessor

The mighty slayer of the terrible Windego, a warrior known only as the Predecessor, hunches atop a roof as the beast within him stirs, sensing Something Wicked about to descend...

This piece was a great lot of fun for me to take on not so much for it's content but more because I decided to do a lot more pen work on it. I had been pretty much just painting and doing brush work for most of my pieces as of late but going over my old etchings really gave me the bug to get supper necrotic hatchy on a piece. That and after getting some new pens that begged me to use them, what else could I do?

All in all, I'm quite pleased with the look the pens gave the piece. It's not too noticeable in this scan, but a lot of the piece has a very retro illustration print (or comic to a lesser degree) due to the pen work and the watercolor interaction... especially up at the top where most forms are primaraly defined through hatching with sepia and black ink.

The pen work also, surprisingly, sped up the process of creating this peace. Since I was using .005 tips, I found I was able to define a lot of shaded areas through hatching alone and get a clean defined shaded area that would have taken me a touch longer with paint alone.

All in all, I forgot how much I loved pen work and you can bet you'll be seeing a lot more of it in the future. I also have several different colors of pens coming to me now, so there might be some interesting inking effects to come
