artwork description | "Hope, as intangible and deceptively elusive as it has become in today's society, is still a powerful emotion that evokes the strength and courage to accomplish actions not yet completed. In this sense, sunrises have always been a reminder that each day is a new day and a chance to start anew again, and birds - namely doves, sparrows, and falcons - have represented hope, along with purity, vitality, and freedom."

my submission for Project-Gift nearly one year ago! HELLO OLD ART I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN EXACTLY ELEVEN MONTHS there are so many glaring errors that i want to fix now ugh (stares pointedly at james, although i do miss how i painted skies last year sops); the colours look different on here than from the preview because i tweaked the hues a bit after everything was finalized OTL (if you'd like to see the original version, please go to this link!)

Yeah, I get that. Sometimes I pull out some of my old works on my story, and I marvel at how far my styles and concepts have adapted, and then the nostalgia kicks in and I feel like I'm missing something! Lately though, I've discovered some new ways to combine the best of my original stuff with my new works, and that is working out pretty well for me! :D

Anyways, cheers, my friend, and keep up the great work! ;p

I like this, it is quite tranquil and peaceful. Overall I think you manage to portray more than the night sky and freedom of the birds, you also manage to bring out the element of friendship, in my opinion, not only in the symbology of the free doves (?) but also in the fact that there are free birds still sitting on the boys, not to mention their sharing in that action and belief (and meeting in the middle of the night to do so). If I were to give any constructive criticism it would be to use a little less of the purple, in this context it has a depressing effect, which can also be said about the pale green of the banisters. The clarity of a deep blue night sky could also be heightened in my opinion. Regardless, it's a nice image, well done.

ahh thank you so much for the thoughtful critique and your interpretation of the scene! just a side note that the sky is more of a twilight leading to either dusk or dawn, depending on the viewer, and i wanted more of a dreamy/surreal effect, which is why i ended up having those colours as the final hues (it does look depressing in a way although i was trying to convey a calming sense of peace and hope- i'll take note of that).

i also wanted to depict the hope for a long-lasting camaraderie between two people, so i'm glad to see that this was able to be expressed via birds and shared action, but probably should have also adjusted the colours for the stone ledge, as i was trying to get them to have some colour from the background greenery before i adjusted the hues. i'll think about doing my remake of this artwork in a starry night sky, though - thank you again!

Beautiful picture. The feathers are well done and help to create depth. I also like the color combinations which give the image a dreamy look.
The only thing I would criticize is that the two birds on the top look a bit unnatural(shape and lighting from the top).
gracefulsunshine's avatar
thank you for the critique! are you referring to the two v shaped birds or the more detailed birds? the more detailed birds could definitely use more colour theory and lighting from the twilight on them. i originally had a more realistic colour scheme, but i ended up changing the hues for a more cohesive look.

thank you again!
