Artwork DescriptionSaying even "I'm home" or "welcome back" was unnecessary because he had come home alive and that was what mattered the most.
[ Happy! Arbook Contest Honourable Mention ]

kairosclerosis | the moment you realize that you’re currently happy—consciously trying to savor the feeling—which prompts your intellect to identify it, pick it apart and put it in context, where it will slowly dissolve until it’s little more than an aftertaste.

EDIT (3/20/2015) - just adding this lovely definition from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows and another note C: when I wrote my original blurb up, I was trying to put it into words that I didn't believe in happiness because of a few key reasons that are listed above; that still holds true, especially when I try to analyze what makes me "happy". My difficulty in regards to Happy! Artbook Contest was essentially wrapped in the concept of kairosclerosis: I am an extremely logical, rational person by nature. Accepting events or emotions for what they may be is not how I work, and whenever I tried to examine what I defined as happiness, nothing came into being without it seeming shallow and artificial - which was why I had a couple issues with both the theme of the contest and some of the entries, because for me, one cannot simply say "if one does this, one will be happy". It's both an oversimplification and overcomplication, and my entry was my way of addressing that point while trying to remain politically correct and adhere to the theme, although it was difficult to voice this because the concept of happiness is different for everyone.

hap
·py1) feeling or showing pleasure or contentment ; 2) fortunate and convenient

to be quite honest, i've never really believed in happiness - it's become such a loosely used term in modern society that i can't find any connection to it. for me, being happy and being content are two entirely different situations, as one can feel content - satisfied with their current situation - or proud of their accomplishments, but being happy is another feeling, and the dictionary can only go so far in defining this term. (it's also why i'm loathe to using the word.)

'coming home' was the closest i could get with relating to the societal norm of happiness (more specifically: feeling content, relieved, fortunate). there's usually this wave of relief that washes over me when i see familiar faces waiting for me, and a sense of contentment and security knowing that i can simply say that "i'm home" and am safe every time i head back from university. even though i change and grow as a individual away from home, home itself symbolizes a place of solidarity, foundation - a place that will always be there for me when i need it. with that in mind, i wanted to paint a calm/welcoming/autumny atmosphere that hopefully embodied 'home' and 'coming home' even if it's just one person waiting because they say that home is where the heart is, so yee - my original characters james (black hair) waiting for his close friend rayne (blond hair) to come back from a war, and both of them relieved that the other isn't dead in a ditch.

not sure if i got through my thoughts clear enough haha ; Q ; but yeah - i do realize that other people have differing opinions on happiness; please don't take offense at my personal opinion. i'd love to hear your thoughts in regards to this topic! :iconnashableedplz: first time painting trees and now i feel like this is Soliloquial Solitude 2.0, only instead of all the uncreative green, it's period blood red and james and rayne are all "elliot you prat get out of here you already had your time to shine" so they punt him out with the force of a million suns :^la

Nice, flowing composition of trees that is unified through the color red. The grey of the mens' outfits contrast with the color scheme of the forest. I would make the woods more realistic as far as colors, and add some shadows and highlights. Although, now that I think about it, the red reminds me of blood, which could evoke "bad blood" between the two guys; excellent use of imagination! Other than that, excellent! I love how you captured the emotion between the two men; it almost seems as if they're brothers or good friends. "Coming Home" is a good name choice for this.

Let me start off by saying that your use of colors is breath-taking. The lighting, colors, and the atmosphere itself matches the mood perfectly. Not bad on painting the trees, this being your first time doing them. I admire the effect t=of shafts of light slicing through the trees.
I see there is much distraction between the two boys, putting distance between them. It makes them feel so close, yet so far apart.
The boy to the left's armor looks nice, but I would say a little less gray on the red fabric. It almost looks like it's made of part-armor, and part-fabric.
I would say a little more detail on the forest floor, but overall the picture looks full and alive.

I want to take a walk through this forest SO BAD omg ;w;. The light shining through all the leaves looks breathtaking, and the piece just seems so bright and lovely and happy :D. If you don't mind me asking, how long did this take you to create? (the progression shots are very interesting as well ^^)

eep thank you for writing such a lovely comment! ;; i'm glad to h ear that what i wanted to reflect from the piece is clearly noticeable from your words /////V///// mm not exactly sure if taking a walk through this forest is a good idea tho with how much red i dumped on it LOL

i'm not exactly sure how long this took me, from start to finish, as it's been nearly a year since i finished this, but i want to say around 30-40 hours? perhaps a bit more. i never intended to actually do progress shots until i realized that i had quite a few

So cool! I really like the way you painted the trees, the strokes you did for their trunks flow very nicely, and OH MAN!!! I just love the rays of light coming through the tree canopies... so spectacular! :la:

Keep up the great work, my friend! ;p

before i respond let me just say that i live for comments that thoroughly express one's opinion and reactions to what they see oh gosh thank you for the thoughtful response! i'm absolutely floored by your comment //////V////// and don't be intimidated - everyone has their own way of formulating their responses C:

in retrospect, while i chose red as it reminded me of blood and all the frustration i had while working on this, i also was reminded of the fact that red is attributed to happiness (traditional weddings in particular are basically a sea of red i suppose) in chinese culture - and while this isn't a wedding, it is a reunion, so i guess that sorta counts? i also wanted to use something other than my usual blue-purple hues, and i'm hoping to use that hue again some day because it was an amazing experience to work with it!

as for the light shining through the leaves, i just created a layer set to addition, and used a brush that was set to fine flat and made strokes that way; then i lightly erased the start of the brushstroke that i might have not wanted C: i could have probably made them more diagonal in tandem to each other though. (hope that helps explain it a bit!)

rayne was such a pain in the ass to shade and i kept on complaining to a friend because ALL THOSE STRAPS ughghghhg but aesthetic is a thing wwww i'm glad you liked the metal pauldrons though! armor in general makes me hnnng too hard :") james's scarf is one of my favourite features about him his clothing, never mind that they're both wearing basically greyscale outfits and i am horrible at designing outfits

thank you for the positive response on my characters and their designs :iconsopsplz: they're part of this original work that i still haven't finished but i'm hoping to upload more artworks featuring them one day (although there's quite a few of them in my gallery already haha)!

(i think i've responded to everything...?) definitely hoping to see your insight on future artworks! if i can scrounge up enough motivation to finish them that is :icontearsofgleeplz:

//shot
I don't even
I don't even know what to say

Thank youuuu :')
The fact you even read my scarily long comment and replied (and so quickly) was enough to have me flipping, but
Wow.

Dawwww, haha, you're welcome xD I'm glad I didn't... scare you off? lels
Mhmm. I just kinda... I don't even know. Just kinda threw out any and all of the thoughts running through my head. Look at my comment's wonderful structure.

Oooh, I never thought of that xD Yeah, that's an interesting way of looking at it xD
Odd, because in psychology, red is attributed to things like danger, sex, anger and so on, stimulating aggression and impulsive thinking. That's why sale signs ins stores are all (usually) red, because it grabs your attention, and triggers that impulsive thinking to buy buy BUY-
//I'll shut up about psychology now.
It does look really pretty, and although there are darker shades, it comes out as a kinda pink - which kinda makes it seem softer and... I really don't know what I'm talking about haha, but the red/pink is pretty, and I honestly can't imagine the forest being any other colour.
Ahhh, yeah. Blue-purple just looks so pretty though, haha, I can understand the temptation xD

Ah. I'm guessing you don't use Fire Alpaca
Nah, that does explain xD It has a really cool effect, I'll definitely be trying it xD haha

Pahaha omg, yes
Detail makes for pretty characters, but stressy artists lels
Pahaha, yes, I totally agree
Pffff- *splutters* you're bad at designing outfits? All my characters have lived in the standard jeans-and-hoodie outfit for years. I have about fifty. The majority of them literally have a costume design that stops after naming the colour of their hoodie. And even that's either blue or red, //shot
Or their clothes/hair is really dark, so it's like hAVE FUN SHADING-
Greyscale is so pretty tho owo

Eeee, you're welcome xD I look forward to seeing more of them xDD
Mhmmm, will definitely go look as soon as I get a spare moment (:

(I think so...?) Oh, definitely xD
Pahaha, oh my, yes, I completely understand x'D
I wish you luck, artist's patience and motivation~ xD haha

it's true that red is associated with that in psychology, but colours do have different meanings in different cultures and i just decided to forgo one for another in a way to connect back to my roots C:

i use SAI, although i've been meaning try clip studio paint sometime sooner or later. good luck! (i tend to stream quite often, so if you stop by one of my sessions, just ask me on tips or anything and i can try and help.)

jeans and hoodies is still quite attractive depending on the jeans and hoodies haha -- i only have a couple OCs because most of the ones i've created are basically a mix of the ones that i use the most, but it just means that i can draw them more :") hair wise, i've found that i tend to go with natural hair colours, but i've always wanted a character with light blue hair since i enjoy shading blue hair the most. hmmm. hMMM. one day.

i'll be needing all of that and more ughhhhh

Yeah, that's really cool xD
Your roots? Oooh, that's awesome xD

Ah, yes. SAI. *sighs longingly* Apple doesn't like good programs ;;
Luckily Fire Alpaca is pretty good... I think...
Oh yeah, clip studio paint, I really... totally know... what that is... *quickly googles*
oh my. Okay. That... Good luck. It looks complicated 0.o'
Oooh, definitely, I'd love to xD What times do you stream? And uh, what time zone is that? lels

Pahaha, well hopefully x'D
Ahh, that's an interesting way of narrowing down your OC's. I might... well, need to do that, maybe.
And lol yeah, the amount of characters I just have rotting away in the depths of my Notes... Poor buggers.
Yeah, same here, tbh. So that means very little deviation between all my many many characters, whoops.
Ooh, sounds cool xD I always find blue easiest to shade for some reason x'D
Pahaha xD

Pahaha xD Don't we all (:

Beautiful work!
I love the way you think, I absolutely agree with you about happiness, ive never been able to gage what will make mw happy. Like coming home.
I moved out of home almos three years, ago thinking this will make me happy, get away from the negative conflict from my family amd live with my friends. But I was wrong. And about 5 months ago I moved back home thinking this will make me happy, but it only made it all worse. So happiness only exists in fiction, for me at least . I can read or see it and feel it from there but its not real.
Ah thankyou for making me think about it, your work and words are excellent.

aldkjfh thank you so much for sharing your experiences and for the lovely words! i'm really honoured to have such a compliment bestowed in regards to my opinions alskdjfh ; u ;

in retrospect, coming home was more of a melange of an experience that i've always loved seeing portrayed in various types of media, and an experience that i wish i would be able to feel more intensely as they are depicted in fiction or described by other people. personally, happiness is overrated in society, but i can (hopefully) see where you're coming from with the notion that happiness only exists in fiction - it's put upon a pedestal as something unattainable yet a necessity in everyday life. /orz

i would offer you my condolences or apologize, but it's a shallow phrase when one can't do anything, but thank you again for sharing a personal experience that my words and artwork were able to evoke. i hope your living conditions are/were able to improve soon!
