Commission for IcedTeaOverlord | Full body + Background (ocean of stars)

thank you for commissioning me! i've never had so much freedom or flexibility with a commission, and it was a pleasant surprise to have been able to use one of my original characters as the subject of this piece, although i hope there's enough stars here to call it an ocean of stars though LOL

was originally going to name this "starlit symphony", "starlit sonata", or something more musically inclined since i wanted the subject depicted here to look as if he was either conducting the stars or embracing the galaxy (how very OOC, though).

ALSO - HAPPY PI DAY BECAUSE 3/14/15 (3.1415) - WE'RE NOT GOING TO SEE THAT FOR ANOTHER CENTURY

degrassé | entranced and unsettled by the vastness of the universe, experienced in a jolt of recognition that the night sky is not just a wallpaper but a deeply foreign ocean whose currents are steadily carrying off all other castaways, who share our predicament but are already well out of earshot—worlds and stars who would’ve been lost entirely except for the scrap of light they were able to fling out into the dark, a message in a bottle that’s only just now washing up in the Earth’s atmosphere, an invitation to a party that already ended a million years ago.

ahh - if you read the description, i noted that i wanted my OC "to look as if he was either conducting the stars or embracing the galaxy". damiano's an atheist, so praying isn't really for him.

thank you!

nice work. I would like to know how you painted the stars, something I find difficult :/ I like your use of two point perspective, it works really well.

ahh thank you kindly ; o ; i've been trying to incorporate more depth into my artworks and i'm glad to know that you like it!

i use a combination of pen (100% opacity) and airbrush (50% opacity) with a light blue or white colour on a layer set to addition on SAI and just dot around, really, although i do sometimes change the opacity for the pen brush to vary the brightness since i can't do that with pen unlike the airbrush. once i have a nice cluster of stars in a particular area, i start copying+pasting and flipping/rotating the stars that i've copied so that it doesn't look like i was too lazy c: let me know if if that helps!

Interesting technique, I will keep that in mind for future reference. basically play around with opacity and transform clusters of stars.
what is pen brush and airbrush tool?, I have not used these before. Thanks for useful info :)
gracefulsunshine's avatar
ah - do you use paint tool SAI? any brush should work given different opacities, but those are the brushes i use to vary up my stars.

I suppose I could turn a batch of stars into a brush stroke or pattern then keep repeating (or clone stamp). what does SAI stand for? is it a specific type of brush tool or have a specific purpose, what do you do with brush tool SAI? I would be glad to know :) thanks

SAI is a program that I use for digital art (like GIMP or Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint), and I'm not sure if it stands for anything. Try experimenting around with brushes to see what you like / dislike with the stars you create. I'd send you a picture of SAI, but my laptop crashed recently and I'm unable to do any digital art in the meantime. Hope this helps!

sorry for the late reply, I have been very busy in college with new projects. Also thanks for responding.

That's interesting I have not heard of SAI, is it free? I will definately have an experiment when I get round to it. I am sure there are many ways of using paintbrushes in photoshop and general repetition being such a versatile tool but any image editor will be just as good.

Possible Solutions - broken laptop

Also about your laptop, sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to my friends laptop since it is so old now (and mine :/), it is like 10 years old.
Maybe just give it a quick clean up, any unnecessary files removed (even like word documents and batches of unused images), it helped my laptop a Ton.
does it still work? or does it just crash upon startup? if it doesn't then try using not windows 7/8 but 'safe' mode version of windows if I am right.

If you ever use you laptop for gaming I know that slows it down a lot, maybe uninstall some games. I'm sure you have alread thought of this, just simply saying suggestions that might help. My laptop used to have STEAM and everytime it updated or automatically run it would stall my laptop so that it would literally take from 30 minutes to 1 hour. As for virus's 'malware bytes' is free and works like a charm. however im guessing it is just a fault with your hardware which otherwise can't help. Ignore this if i'm being too technical :P (or rather not technical enough). I was lucky to have mine fixed by a friend of my mum and have it repaired cheaply and reliably, i would recommend this solution if you trust any local friends who have the knowledge.
