Flag for Kinky People in Vanilla Relationships

This is my rendition of a “pride flag” representing kinky people who are in vanilla relationships.

The imagery is a modification of the “black and blue with love” motif of the Leather Pride flag. The top half of the flag is filled with a field of the colour “vanilla”, and the white band in the center forms a fracture line across the heart, which is larger and more central. The fracture line is formed so that the bottom fragment takes the shape of a jagged and pointed heart itself.

I of course have my own reasons for the choices I made in this design, but I will take a page from Tony DeBlase and leave the specifics up to the viewer for now.

Here is my rationale for the design:

The flag is meant to signify the double-consciousness that I personally experience.  The Leather Pride flag's motif of the heart (love) and the black and blue stripes (bruising) is a part that I have pushed down in my own identity and kept private.  The greatest force for this submerging of self is the love I have for my vanilla spouse.  Thus the softer curves of the heart go on top, in a field of vanilla.  The white line suggests a heartbeat, but fractures the heart in two.  The more jagged piece lives underwater, amidst the trappings of BDSM.

The fracture line is white, perhaps signifying some ideal of purity or posturing of prudishness that can be used to conceal the kinky heart.  The heart has been broken, but both pieces continue to beat on in their own way.  The whole could be mended, but for that to happen the rest of the situation would need to change.  The field of the flag would need to be rewritten.

Yup, that's pretty much how my life is xD

There are other struggles, but this one is mine.  It's good to know others soldier through the same conflicts!

Somehow, it doesn't strike me as something totally negative, as it allows me to vent my feelings through illustrations. However, from time to time, it does get frustrating, but I guess that feeling can pop up with anything, regardless of the theme. :P
Window decal?   If you see a truck with this on the rear window!
I have sent SUNNSTONE panels to Asia for custom orders.
Can I send yours.

Sure, I offer this up for anyone to use.

Let me know if you want the SVG file and I'll send it to you somehow.

Great idea and design! :-)

Thank you very much!  I only wish I didn't need the thing!

Hope you can throw it away somewhen in the near future :-).

Damn... simple, rational and powerful. Its not often a 'simple' piece sways me, but after reading the rationale it does speak to me. The piece itself is well executed, and well thought through. I see a clear statement, or maybe a self-preparation to make a statement by manifesting your feelings into artwork as an ember to opening communications related to your predicament. I have been in a similar predicament and it was through art that we were able to discuss the subject, and engage in making changes to further strengthen our relationship. I do hope it works out for the both of you, and that your duality becomes more cohesive.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Perhaps I will try to communicate through art.  We shall see.

YAY FOR MORE ART! try spray paint, I reckon you could work some magic with it ☺

That's a really good idea!  This could work well with stencils! :boogie:
BloodlessSnow's avatar
Exactly that! Your flag especially, it would take a few layers but it would work beautifully well on a huge wall

Well, figure a simple block for the vanilla, one for the blue, stripes for black, a heart shape, and then the heartbeat crack over the top.  So that's basically four stencil layers, I think.  You could free-hand the white stripe, if you were so inclined.  A bit of rough drip could look for the heart!

Fuck yeah! Take a look at Molotow Dripsticks, they'd be perfect for that job ☺

This fits me perfectly.

I can't tell you how much it means to me that others relate to this.  It's an expression of an experience that affects me deeply, and it helps to see others recognise it.

Of course. Being in the relationships that we are in is kind of unique and it's always good to find others in similar situations.

Excellent idea and design. Like many others, I would qualify to fly this flag. I'm going to try to post it on my Facebook page somehow just so I can not tell my "friends" what it means. Let them be in the dark about it.

I am intrigued, and look forward to finding out how they react!

Do share with us if any of them interpret it!

Me too. I'm thinking about posting a small version of this on my profile page if you don't mind. There is some kind of regular dA stamp feature I played around with at one time. It might be cool if you made one of those.
GospodinP's avatar
That does seem like a good idea!  Do you have any quick links to how best to make a stamp?  Is it just an image of a particular dimension?  Do I have to tag it specially?

I saw lots of them, but not how any are made. I think, however, that they are just small images of a prescribed size that are posted to the stamps collection on dA. Some people put a jagged "stamp" border on them and some don't.

If you decide to create a stamp, my personal preference is for one without the jagged stamp border since it's more of a flag to me.  ;) (Wink)  (You could always create two versions as well).

If you browse down the menus you can see lots of examples:  main page->categories->deviantart related->stamps.

I didn't find anything on dA about an official spec or size for them, but pasted one that was the size they all seem to be and it was 99 x 56 pixels. I'm not sure about tags.

I did see that there are some groups devoted to stamps, and found groups devoted to them and one has tons of tutorials in their gallery so I would defer to their presumably greater wisdom: deviousstamps.deviantart.com/
