but shouldn't the shadow cast by the basket be sharper and darker than the shadow cast by the buildings?

If you would like to be physically correct yes. But it was conscious decision to make the basket shadow brighter so it doesn't compete with the basket itself.
And I wanted the building shadows to be as graphic as possible which is why I didn't blur them too much. In real life that basket shadow shape is wrong too. The good thing about art is that you can make all kinds of choices to create the effect you want regardless if it is realistic or not.
