A Florida panther and her cub among the palmettos.

This is my state animal, the Florida panther, in traditional Seminole attire. I’m aware that the outfit is not entirely accurate and I took a lot of artistic liberties with the design. My inspiration for this piece came mainly from the Florida flag, which features a Seminole woman along a shoreline of palmettos. Old photographs depicting Seminole women and their families have also helped to inspire. I see lots of art representing Native Americans, but very rarely do I see Seminole art. Even rarer, Seminole art depicting the bond of mother and child. There is plenty of art in this world for the hunters and warriors; now for a portrait of a domestic warrior and her hunter-to-be.

Though the figures appear subdued, the true intensity lies beneath the layers of vibrant color and beaded necklaces. Florida has a spectacular cultural heritage and a wild beauty that tends to be overlooked by the modern eye. When people think of Florida they think of Disney or the crowded beaches. As a fifth generation Floridian, I think of my state’s natural splendor, culture, and unconquerable wildness. A little fact: the Seminole Tribe of Florida is considered to be the only unconquered indian tribe, and remains a sovereign entity in the United States. The Florida panther represents the same indomitable spirit. There are close to 150 remaining in Florida today and conservation efforts continue to increase their rate of survival. Another interesting fact: The Panther clan is the largest in the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

I hope this piece sparks a little patriotism in my fellow Floridians and inspires others to explore the heritage and culture of their own states.

For the contest at :iconanthro-fantasy-club: I decided to use the symbol on the mother panther’s sleeve to represent the “sunshine” state. The palmetto was chosen for the background because I wanted to also include Florida’s state plant, which grows everywhere and has a multitude of uses. It was invaluable to the Seminoles’ survival and I’m sure to the panther’s survival when it comes down to it. I’ve used this plant myself for so many things including weaving, waterproofing structures, roasting marshmallows, and even eating the palmetto heart. I felt it deserved a place in this painting because of its otherwise overlooked importance.

Enjoy :)

This is wonderful, I don't know how I didn't notice it until now. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to do with the folklore and traditional drawings that go into Texas and Louisiana tradition and legends. Using local windlife therianthropes in local clothing.

a lot of us Floridians here xD I was trying to post yesterday and today and had so much trouble oi oi oi, but am back  :) I wanted to tell u how I just love this piece....as ofc I am Floridian :)  I had read how you had researched our beautiful state.. I must admit that made me so proud of you and the wonderful people in my home too!  IDK how old you are, but I've been around a little while and have seen our state at what I thought was at its finest.  I have such great memories of the widest white sand beaches filled with sandollars, sea glass and the most beautiful array of seashells anyone can possibly imagine.    The beaches have always been a very special playground which I'll hold dear until I leave this planet xD

In any case, your work is just amazing and glad I finally got a chance to post here today without Google going nutso on me lol.    I'll be checking out more of your art....you have a new fan in me Hug  O one more thing.. Heart of palm...I think it's illegal now, but I did have it once.. it was so good! Love

I love springs and rivers around here.  They are my favorite places.  Interesting about the heart of palm!  I didn't know it's now illegal.  I just remember as a kid me, my sis, and my dad were building a fort out of palm fronds and that's when we cut into the heart and had a bite.

I'm guessing u live a little northwest, but there's tons of beautiful springs in Florida, and I agree, they're definitely one of my favorite places too.   I found this! I think u'll get a charge out of it..it was written in 1987!  lol
Swamp Cabbage: Southern Florida Native With A Heart Of Pure Palm  I guess I need to find out if they're in fact legal to cut or not, but u do have to kill the tree to get to the heart of palm; which I would reluctantly do  as I'm sure u would lol. In any case, that's a great article and hope u enjoy  it as much as I did. xD
