Even though I've been lurking on dA daily for years I somehow completely forgot that going into dAmn was possible. Silly me went back a few days ago and it felt like coming home. I could emote again!

So yes, I am committed to coming back to dA more regularly now. I miss the community though I'm sure much has changed in the last years (and the children in the chats seem even younger). I'll work on posting a few things over the next few days showing a highlight of what I've been up to. Spoiler: not much.

I'm still creating design at work but outside of work I haven't done much for "art". I have been knitting and crocheting like mad, though, which is an art form most wouldn't think of when thinking of art. My health has been bad for the last two years and playing with yarn is one of the few things I've been able to physically manage. I may post a few of my more favorite pieces as they are finished, but we'll see.

If any of my old peeps are still around, drop me a line! I've already found some of you in #Thumbhub and I'm sure there's a few more of you lurking.

Aaaaahhhh, dA. I've missed you so.

I'm back!

:faint: IKR? It's been a long time since I've had the time and mental capacity to do more than just lurk on dA. It got to the point I forgot dAmn even existed :gasp:

But I'm working on changing that a bit. I recently bought Nestalgica's old Nikon D3100, so in theory I'll be getting back into photography again. I've been doing several complex doodles that I'm uploading as I finish them.

Prints, anyone?

I've decided to enable some of my stuff as prints. Right now it's just the doodles, but if anyone wants a print of anything else, let me know and I'll get it enabled for you. I'd appreciate any support y'all can give.

Instagram & Tumblr

I've started to actually use my Instagram. I've been uploading progress shots there as well as some silly doodles I do for a friend at work whenever I visit his building. Give me a follow! GoaliGrlTilDeath on Instagram or NuttyTaichou on Tumblr

Hey! JenFruzz has tagged me and more or less dared me to promote some of my favorite recent Daily Deviations. I know most of you who watch me have been around for half of forever and I'm certain you're all familiar with Daily Deviations. But if you've neglected to give them a look recently, you should go back! I know for a while they were awarding half a bajillion a day but they've been a lot more selective recently and the quality has been pretty great. Don't believe me? Do believe me? Either way, here are some of my favorites recently!

Welcome to a Community Volunteer project in which we will be highlighting our favourite Daily Deviations featured within the recent weeks! We would like to encourage the community to join in on this project by simply going through the Daily Deviations page and collecting some of their favourite pieces of art within a journal titled "My Daily Deviation Highlights"! We hope this project will help spread awareness and love for Daily Deviations and our fellow deviant artists!

Use the hashtag #DDHighlights so we can find your journals!

I would like to tag Nestalgica  Ikue  kaotickell  and justsomedude86 . Do this. I dare you!

Thu Jun 4, 2015, 9:29 PM
So... wow. I'm on a trend of only updating my journal after major life things steamroll me, so now would be a good time to update y'all!

Katherine Caroline Charlotte, AKA: I BOUGHT A HOUSE.

Yup. I bought a house. I went to start looking for a new apartment since mine was a death trap and my landlord was the scum of the earth, and my parents decided they'd loan me money for a down payment and so I bought a house instead! Her name is Katherine Caroline Charlotte because I keep screwing up the name of the street she's on and end up cycling through all the names just like your dad did with you and your siblings (and dogs, in my case). She's a great house, and I moved my stuff last weekend but haven't unpacked yet; I'm in the process of refinishing trim and don't want to unpack until I can get my bed out of the living room :B If you want to see photos, hit me up on Facebook since I don't want to spam DA with that sort of snapshot shit.

Coaching is hard.

I knew coaching wasn't easy when I took the job of Head Coach for my college's hockey team, but man I did NOT expect the insane time commitment it actually had on me. Every spare second of my life was devoted to that team, and though I loved every second of it I'm loving my time off during the off-season. Of course, every time I see a hockey game or see anything my brain is analyzing how I can use that to better my team, so is it ever really the "off-season"? I'm hoping they'll take me back next year because it was seriously fulfilling :meow:

In other hockey news, I'm currently sitting at 99 games played this season. And, despite my name of "Goalie Girl Til Death", 30 of those I have skated out. And I'm good at skating out, too-- It's like I know what it takes to beat a goalie or something. I've scored 8 goals this season and had about 15 assists. Cha. Don't that turn your brain upside down.

Life is hard.

Yeah. So other than making a massive purchase and having my whole life swallowed by hockey, coaching, and work, what's left of life has been kicking my ass. I'm learning I'm terrible at dealing with stress and have wanted to just run away and become a hermit several times, but I'm working through it all. I've had a few good friends supporting me and it's made all the difference. Good friends are awesome; I hope you all have a few you can count on :aww:

This also means I've had zero time to do any sort of art. I was silly and started a Year of Drawing during a break from hockey because apparently a week of freedom is enough to make me forget how little free time I actually had. Even though I've been free of coaching for a month I've been too busy to do any art of any kind, and it's starting to wear on me. My poor project, Ten Reborn, has had a grand total of two hours of work put into it since September. September! It's a sad, sad thing.

But in spite of all of that, I'm doing pretty good with the adult gig, and it's somehow making itself worth it in the end... I think.

Just don't expect to see my mug around much.

Hockey. Coaching. And back to art.

Fri Dec 12, 2014, 5:53 PM
I don't write nearly as many journals as I used to, which you as my watchers probably appreciate. This is partly because my life is so hectic I don't have time for frivolous things like journals, and partly because, well, I haven't had much I wanted to say. However, #ikue made this super sweet skin (that i then butchered the colors for) and I figured, hey, why not write a bit!

Hockey & Coaching

So my last real journal was about the massive changes in my life, what with the new job and moving towns and all. Not long after that journal, though, I took on another job: Head Coach for the WSU Women's Hockey team. Sounds super fancy, right? Well, it's not quite as impressive as it sounds since it's a Club team and most of the players are novice, but it has been a LOT of work. I put in 15-20 hours a week for them on top of my 40 hours of work and on top of my own hockey, so naturally I have virtually no time left over for myself or my art. But it has been an awesome experience and I am just blown away at how much these players have progressed, and how much they trust me. Cha. They trust me. What the f.

Other than coaching, I've been playing so much hockey it's amazing. Not only do I have my normal 50ish-game travel schedule, but I have local league hockey as well. I'm on the ice at least three times a week usually, and it has made the move to Pullman 100% worth it. My team is the Geezers and yes, they are Geezers. Me and the one other girl are the youngest by about 25 years. The best part is their tradition: Scotch after the game. It's amazing.

Year of Drawings

A few years ago I successfully completed the Year Of Design Challenge, where I created a design for every single day of the year. Yeah, I finished like half a month late, but that was pretty good considering my schedule at the time.
Well, this year I've decided I HAVE to get myself drawing again, so I'm starting a Year of Drawings. I will, over the course of the next year [or so] draw at least one thing a day. It may be a completed drawing, it may be a concept sketch, it may be a warm-up for working on another project, but I want to get my hand moving at least once a day*.
*Probably not including those days where I've got 4 or 5 hockey games and travel, but you know, other than that.

Thumb Dump

Question for y'all: Would you rather I post all of the drawings for my Year Of Drawings here on dA, or would you rather I post them all on Tumblr and only the best ones/a recap here?

P.S. Ikkaku, I can't figure out how you did the color blocks in the thumbs. Halps!

My DeviantART Story

Thu Aug 7, 2014, 4:09 PM
Gather around, deviants, and let auntie Jessie tell you the tale of her time here on DeviantART

It all started nine years ago...

October 2, 2004 to be exact. I had to do the math to figure it out, but that was the start of my junior year of college. It seems strange to me that it was only then; it feels like dA has always been a part of my life. I can't remember why or how I stumbled across dA or what I did with my time when I first started, but I do know when it got real good.

The Chats

About a year after joining dA I started lurking in the chats; mostly #Thumbshare. It was there that I met two of the most important people in my life: Nestalgica and BiKaZe. Max in particular became super-important when he helped me launch our project dAZine. DaZine, in turn, attracted a slew of new friends, including the other two members of our dA Family, kaotickell and LouieHitman. The five of us have grown very close over the years and spend a lot of time scheming and talking outside of dA now. In fact, Nestalgica even lets me come visit him every once in a while :meow:
#Thumbsshare also introduced me to other awesome friends, such as ScarletWarmth, Ikue, shebid, admx, Clovdyx, DaPineapple, LawnyJ, mossi-mo, SadisticIceCream, The-Egg, and ScarletWarmth. More recently I've added friends like AshleyxBrooke, justsomedude86, and plasmid1 (or 12, he's been demoted a few times). Many of them have, like me, grown up and found/had to get lives that take them away from dA and/or dAmn, but many I still keep up with thanks to the powers of Facebook.

The Forums

In the last year or so I've also started lurking around some of the forums (mostly General Art, Digital Art, Software, and Hardware). I've found there are a lot of people in need of help and I'm starting to realize, being old (by internet standards) and seriously experienced in comparison, I've got a lot I can give back. So I've found it very fun to help other deviants in this way.

The Art

Of course I still post art every once in a while, but not as much as I used to. That's simply because 90% of my artistic energies go towards my job, and most of that stuff isn't really stuff I can post. It bothers me sometimes that my gallery is so heavy on my old works (many over 10 years old) but alas, life is rough as an adult. Little by little, though, I'm working on my own stuff, and prioritizing my art. Someday you'll even start to see chapters of Ten Reborn posted!

And that's all I hafta say about that.

Since we're talking about my history here, let's start out with my first favorites ever:

Big Change + Looking for Prints

Wed Jul 23, 2014, 8:21 PM

Big Changes

Well. It's been a while. Normally I have no good reason for my long journal silences other than I have nothing of note to say, but this time I have a few good reasons.

Butt Jokes

First, back in March, I was hospitalized. My butt tried to kill me. Not even kidding.
Go figure my first hospitalization would come from a perirectal abscess which, if you don't know, is an abscess that is deep up in your butt, surrounding your rectum, and causes so much pain in your ass (literally) that everything sucks and you want to die. Also, because it's your ass that hurts, you're too embarrassed to go to the doctor so you put it off until the infection starts to enter your bloodstream and you get massively sick before biting the bullet and going to the doctor and having tons of people you don't know get up close and personal with your butt. Four days of hospital food and a surgery later, I was released into a world that was regrettably too polite to make all the wide open butt jokes.

So I spent about a month recovering from that fiasco, then I got a new job and I moved towns.

New Job, New Town

Cha. BIG change in my life. I left behind my job as a senior designer at Walla Walla Community College after almost seven years and moved back to a very familiar town, Pullman, to work at my alma mater, Washington State University. I'll admit, I already miss the culture of WWCC and the small college feel, but I think it's just fear of change. WSU is very large, VERY large, compared to what I'm used to, and I'm not used to only being involved in a small part of it's world. At WWCC I had my hands solidly into every single part of the school and I knew what was happening. Here, there's just way too much to keep track of. Granted, I'm only in my second week, and to be honest I'm also really excited about the work I'll be doing and the people I'll be working with. I'm also really excited that I'll be overseeing student designers and being that first person to guide their professional careers. Plus, WINDOWS. I'm out of the dark, dreary basement and I have an entire wall of windows in our office. Sure, my cubicle can't see the outside directly, but omg natural light. Plus, hockey. JESSIE CAN PLAY HOCKEY DURING THE WEEK AGAIN!

So, now that I'm slowly getting unpacked and settled and my job is starting to make sense and life feels like it's under control again, I'll be getting more active around dA. You may see me in the chats and forums but I'll probably forget about my journal again for months. It happens.

Looking for Inspirational Prints

In the process of moving I found an entire box full of nice, matching black frames. I have an art room in my new place and I was thinking maybe I should use these frames to put up prints of pieces I find inspirational.

Can you think of any design, comic, manga, or other artwork that has prints available that I might be interested in? I'd prefer stuff that would inspire me to actually work on my graphic novel (hahahahahahaha), but I can't expect y'all to know what that is. So, throw stuff my direction!

Here's some of my more recent Favs. I haven't had the time to go looking for new artists or undiscovered good stuff, so it'll probably all be from established, popular artists because that's what's shown up in my watch feed and daily deviations. Deal with it.

What are you all up to?

I realize I haven't caught up with hardly any of my dA people lately. What are you all up to? How's life? Are you still there? Shoot me a comment or note and let me know what's up with your lives! :dummy:

Way Back Thumb Dump

Tue Jan 28, 2014, 9:54 PM

Have you ever gone back to the very last page of your favourites and started browsing forward through time? If not, you should.
I've been on DeviantART for over nine years and I have thousands of pieces in my favourites. Browsing through them tonight was like a trip through time and I found it fascinating how my interests have shifted through the years. I'm also happy to see some of these pieces that I remember featuring in dA Zine as unknown work are now showered with the comments and favs they deserve :meow:

Now, without further delay, a bazillion thumbs :dummy:

This takes us up to about 2009... Part 2 will be coming.

Need some help... again.

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 19, 2013, 8:19 PM
I have another plea for help, this time about Manga Studio 5.
I recently bought the program since I'm starting to get serious about my graphic novel and I really liked a lot of it's features over Photoshop when it comes to comic making. And I still like a lot of it. However... I am so frustrated. NOTHING is intuitive to me at all! I struggle with even the basic things and I can't find tutorials or answers online because apparently I'm the only one having these problems. It's likely because I've been at the professional level with Photoshop for a decade and thus my brain can't switch over, but still. I need some serious help.

Have you used Manga Studio 5 or 5EX? Would you be willing to answer questions and help ease my frustrations as I try and learn the program? If you are willing, please drop me a line. I'm going crazy over here.
For example:
How do you set default text styles?
Can you change page resolution without destroying all your crops, bleeds, and margins?
Can you just select an item and hit delete or do you have to jump through hoops to get rid of it?
Can you set default panel strokes and styles?
Can you make it actually use those defaults?
Can you make sweeping changes (i.e. Font changes) across your project or do you have to change everything manually and individually?
Can you constrain text to a balloon so that the balloon shape determines line breaks? Or do you have to do manual line breaks?

These are the frustrations I've been having just tonight. I'll have more tomorrow I'm sure! :D

In the Market for a Cintiq

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 21, 2013, 3:29 PM
I'm in the market to buy a Cintiq. Here's my dilemma: Should I buy a new 13HD or try and find a used 21-22" older model?

The 13HD is enticing because it's the newest version and it's small enough to [theatrically] use in my lap. I currently use a medium Intuos4 so the active area is comparable, but since I'd be working on a screen now it will actually be less drawing space than the screen I'm used to looking at. When it comes to things like tool panels/palettes, that could make a big difference.

The 21CX is larger and I can get one used for around the same price as a new 13HD. However two major drawbacks I see are A) the reliability risk of buying used, especially off eBay, and B) it may not work in my lap. I do not work at a desk so I'm not sure if the larger version is something that would work. However my biggest fear is forking out $1000 for the smaller 13HD only to find it's actually too small for my needs.

What are your thoughts? Should I go smaller, newer, and portable or go larger and used? Does anyone have a larger Cintiq that they have had success working with off a desk?

(Before you suggest going and trying that out, know that the nearest showroom is over 5 hours away... not happening!)

It's my [DeviantART] Birthday!

Wed Oct 2, 2013, 12:15 PM
Eight years I have been a member of this site. That's a long time. It's amazing how one website, a bunch of 0s and 1s floating in some hard drives somewhere, became such a huge part of my life. I've met some of my best friends here. I get the bulk of my inspiration thanks to dA. I wouldn't be playing Pokemon non-stop if it wasn't for dA (and my dA family instigating). Yup, life would be different.

Anyway, as a celebration, here is a fresh journal with fresh features! Enjoy!

Looking for Friends

Alright, so as I've mentioned in the past (over a year ago, you're forgiven if you've forgotten) I'm taking on a new project called Ten Reborn, a graphic novel. Well, the story centres around ten friends who are from all over the world. Problem is, little Jessie here has only been to a few places in the world and hasn't yet had a chance to learn everything there ever was to know about every culture. That's where I need help.
If you (or someone awesome you know) is from Japan, The Philippines, South Korea, Spain, or Russia (far-eastern, preferably) and want to just chat with me about your culture and things you've found that others find different about you, please, let me know! I've researched a lot but Google can only take me so far. I want the inside scoop!

Other News

Work has been crazy busy, so there isn't a whole lot to say. Graduation is tomorrow, which will get rid of one of the major things I've had to work on, but that just means everything that's been put on the back burner because of Graduation is now coming back on my plate. They keep telling me "Job Security".
Other than that, I'm playing Pokémon. I got all 151 in the first generation and now I'm on to the second. You'd think I'd get tired of this. Nope.

So, I logged in tonight after being offline for about 10 hours and was welcomed with over 200 comments and faves on my two latest tutorials. That's never happened to me before! I don't know who you are, mysterious person who featured my work, but thank you very much!
And sorry for not llama'ing and thanking for favs. I have to go to bed soon :paranoid:

That being said, I just spent an awesome weekend with Nestalgica doing things like buying trees and houseplants and eating a lot of food and trading pokemon.  It was great fun. It was a great way to wrap up a nice 5 weeks of solid travel. Next weekend I play on staying home and doing absolutely nothing, and then after that playing more hockey :la:

Can anyone think of some more tutorials I can do? Either based on stuff I've done or stuff you've wanted to know how to do? I enjoy making them but I'm running out of ideas :slow:
I am working on a massive (slightly out of date) Illustrator tutorial that I need to finish, and a "How to Make Your Stuff Not Look Like An Amateur Did it" tutorial, which I need suggestions for.

Jessie used Procrastinate!

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 4, 2013, 1:37 PM

It was very effective!

So, instead of being productive during my off-work, off-hockey hours, Jessie has been spending hours upon hours playing Pokémon. Yes, she has even gone as far as buying a second Gameboy Colour so she could buy Red and complete her Pokédex. And then bought all the other generations so I can get the complete Pokémon experience. Tax return well-spent, methinks. You see, I never got to play Pokémon as a kid since it came out when I was in high school and the parentals thought I was too old for it. So now I'm 29 and making up for it.

That being said, I am making progress on my main project Ten Reborn. I've been having semi-regular meetings with my editor-in-chief/character psychologist Nestalgica and we've been working on a lot of the details it takes to make this thing work. Hopefully we'll soon be into scripting and drawing. So exciting, but so scary :la:

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 17, 2012, 11:09 AM
So,first off, gotta thank TeaPuck for giving me a sub after my last journal. Steve, I know you hate being called Steve (I don't know why, it's not like it's not your name or anything), but thank you :aww:. Y'all wish you were as awesome as Steve.

Other than that, it's been a bit slow. Playing a little hockey here and there but the season's been slow-- all the tournaments have been falling on the same few weekends so I only can do one of three or four I normally do. I have been kicking ass and taking names, even if I'm slow as a heifer. Recovering from 8 months out haven't been kind to me.

I have been attempting to work on my major projects like Ten Reborn but I've been bogged down with freelance work and a general lack of anything but an overabundance of "meh". I have been playing a lot of Sims lately, though, and let me tell ya, the houses and community lots I've been building ROCK.

Although I'm finally starting to lose weight, thanks to not being able to eat anything :dummy: Go figure after a month of exercise and healthy eating and I gain 2 pounds but two weeks of being sick and I lose 8. whatevs.

So, um.... Yeah.

Also, apparently having more than the basic emotes for "current mood" is a premium feature :B

Happy Halloween everybody!

I have come to discover that writing is really really hard work :stare:
By that I mean I've been trying to work on my new project Ten Reborn and I vastly underestimated the amount of research, thought, and headdesking that is involved in a project like this, and I haven't barely even started sketching :faint:.

Also, still kind of injured. I can't seem to get my hip to recover. I might have to break down and pay for PT :stare: That sounds unpleasant.

But! The main reason for this journal is this:

Sogyo-kun recently won the contest over at Kyouraku-Fans and, as a prize, gets some work featured. Woooo!
