Atomic Blonde by symonxCelebrate the home release of Atomic Blonde with a new contest from DeviantArt! Create an original piece of art illustrating secret agent Lorraine Broughton (played by Charlize Theron) in the world of Atomic Blonde — inspired by the movie and exclusive animated storyboards.

Judges comments:

This piece fulfils everything we were looking for; unmistakeable 1980s elements, a feeling of action and kinetic movement, Lorraine herself looks badass, and the rendering skill is remarkable. It's a great composition, bringing focus without losing attention to detail. A deserving winner.

TheRafa will receive:

$6,000 USD, 1 - Year Core Membership, Atomic Blonde Blu-ray and Graphic Novel Signed by Author Antony Johnston

Judges comments:

Another piece which fulfils all the contest criteria, and also has a clever composition in the circular sweep of action, drawing the eye around the picture. The scenic perspective is also excellent. The colour palette itself is great.

madtom86 will receive:

$3,000 USD, 6 - Month Core Membership, Atomic Blonde Blu-ray and Graphic Novel Signed by Author Antony Johnston

Judges comments:

Full of action and 1980s ambience, albeit it almost seems more that Lorraine is fighting off a zombie horde rather than a squad of deadly communists. The use of light and shade to draw focus is impressive, and the pink umbrella brings a much-needed burst of colour to an otherwise muted palette.

timens will receive:

$1,000 USD, 6 - Month Core Membership, Atomic Blonde Blu-ray and Graphic Novel Signed by Author Antony Johnston

This was a most enjoyable, but also very difficult, contest to judge as the range of talent and skill on display was amazing. We could easily have chosen a dozen winners from the finalists! We commend everyone who took part, and hope to see more from you all again soon. After much agonising over our decision we present the winners, and our comments, above.

- Antony Johnston and Sam HartAtomic Blonde Author and Illustrator

Universal Studios and DeviantArt came together to challenge you to illustrate Lorraine Broughton, played by Charlize Theron, in the action - packed world of Atomic Blonde — and the winners are in!

We sent the 25 kickass semi-finalists to Atomic Blonde graphic novelists Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, who, with an independent judge, then reviewed the pieces that best represented agent Lorraine Broughton in action—in the backdrop of the 1980’s.

The three winners above have been picked for their illustration of action, style, and use of the character, Lorraine Broughton, in Atomic Blonde. The winners will receive incredible cash prizing, along with DeviantArt Points, and copies of both the Blu-ray and original Atomic Blonde graphic novel signed by the judges!

All of our Semi-Finalists won a 6-month Core Membership, 800 DeviantArt Points, and a signed copy of both the Blu-ray and graphic novel on which the movie was based! Congratulations, and thank you to everyone who entered!

In the Atomic Blonde Fan Art Contest, DeviantArt and Universal Studios challenged deviants to illustrate agent Lorraine Broughton, played by Charlize Theron, in the action-packed world of Atomic Blonde. After much review and deliberation by our judges, see which amazing pieces of art have been awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!

So has one of the 22 semi-finalists, I’m wondering if anyone has received their prizes already, the Atomic Blonde Blu-ray and Graphic Novel? I’ve sent the address when asked a month ago or so but havent received anything so far.

I believe that many traditional artists have given up on leaving to participate, knowing they would lose!
You missed a great opportunity.

If a separate prize had been launched in the contest, between digital and traditional, it would have been more honest.

Are you really gonna just write off all the effort and the hours upon hours of work each of the artists did as a "goddamn joke" (I'm talking ALL of the entries btw)? That's a pretty shitty move if you ask me.

It would be more correct to call it "DIGITAL - photoshop contest".
it is almost always: in major contests.
These semi-finalists show it.
Digital art (or semi/full-digital manipulated) always wins.
Is more social-friendly, also with regard to thumbnails links and reposts, for example. More "cool", and the colors help this mechanism.

It would be better if they said it before: "All of them are accepted, but only digital entries art wins"... It would have been more honest.
So some of us would not even have drawn... if we already knew we did not have a chance.
For many people to buy a graphics tablet and digital coloring programs is impossible. Sorry for my english.

That is so much bullsh!t. I've seen so much digital art (even pro, even contest winners) that is too dark, most of the composition blurred/smudged/blended into incoherence, and looking like brown dust/smoke.

I might agree with you if you'd said digital is just more popular.

I can't believe you would say this after centuries of traditional versus decades of digital.

I am glad that my comment opened a debate. Personally I find semi-dishonest such a contest.
And I believe that many traditional artists have given up on leaving to participate, knowing they would lose. You missed a great opportunity.
If a separate prize had been launched in the contest, between digital and traditional, it would have been more honest.
I do not question the quality of certain works. The winner 1st was great.
But if you look at the 25 semi-finalists well... many of them do not even have the basics of anatomy. This is disgusting.
Digital art can be wonderful, but not if it is used as a means to get you to win more easily.
it's ridiculous to put together digital and traditional art in the same competition knowing that only digital is rewarded.
A digital piece can be refinished infinitely and you have millions of colors available. Millions of colors, and dozens of planes, and pre-used tricks if used well can cover a bad design and make it cooler than a nice ink design.
Instead, if you make a small mistake or detail in a traditional illustration, you have to do it all again.
In the thumbnails of web pages, only the digital-art works is attractive and "cool".
An excessive cash prize for those who want to reward? Who is already rich enough to practice with advanced technologies?
Personally, in conclusion, I think the winner has really deserved the first prize. But the selection of the 25 semi-finalists is ridiculous.
I knew I did not win, my illustration is nothing special, but many great artists have not even participated. That's because they knew that only digital art would be rewarded.
Again I apologize for my English. P.S., I still do not understand if others illustrations, like mine, they were rejected because they were not Americans.

I really like this comment. The blurred and smokey comment seemed really on-point too about digital paintings that look fine at first glance but all end up being sort of same-y. Though I never would have thought to articulate it myself.  The piece that won are fine and well executed but it would have been really bad ass to see something totally unexpected. ( My mind went to needlework for some reason. ) they just look like promotional posters, unlike interesting fan art it doesn't bring any new elements or possibilities to the character.  Digital Art might make it easier to layer and undo but in the end it's the piece itself that matters. Hell, just bouncing around dA you can see terrabytes of horrible looking digital art, although it's convenient the medium is no guarantee of the success of a piece. And I've actually seen a lot of people develop a ton of bad habits from getting a tablet too early that can cripple their development of hand-eye coordination, committing to lines, proportions etc.  ( My art sucks even though I've taken so many figure drawing classes, it'd suck even more if I couldn't draw a line without ctrl zing and using the lasso tool a thousand times. ) Anyway, sorry for the long comment.

Alright alright let me explain what I meant (I know I phrased it badly)...

On a professional scale, in my opinion, digital art is generally superior thanks to the way its created.

There are traditional art pieces that are much better than some digital art pieces, but I personally think that the most complex and interesting art is digital. You just can't get the same depth and perfection of colour, shading, etc.

I've seen many traditional art pieces that look as if they were real, but I've seen more digital art that looks real, and more - it can really explore fantasy thanks to the (as fore mentioned) limitless nature.

Anyway, this is just my opinion based on my experiences. I don't know if I explained myself very well

Thanks for your clarification. I respect that you have your opinion. My take is that digital is rarely as soulful as traditional. It has a coldness and impersonal nature that doesn't move me. Maybe I've just been looking at bad digital art?

Now you say it, I do agree that you see more meaningful/abstract traditional art in general.

But I think that digital art can be expressive as well...

The best examples I can think of are actually in computer games, especially story-driven ones.
The art in those games can be stunning and moving.

If you mean it ALWAYS looks better than traditional art, I wouldn't agree with that statement. It depends, but yeah, it suits better for commercial works most of the time.

Yeah, I meant that the best pieces tend to look better than traditional best pieces, although it is a close call.

And I agree on the commercial aspect - which is why most of the artistic jobs are to do with digital art.

Devious Dreams: The winners! The Devious Dreams campaign launched in March 2019 as a chance for DeviantArt to grant artists the tools they need to make their creative evolution a reality. With over $20,000 in prizing available to make dreams come true, thousands of deviants shared a wide range of creative and heartfelt dreams for their artistic future. We particularly enjoyed seeing the support everyone put forward for each others’ creative goals. Now that the campaign has come to a close, it is our honor to announce the recipients of Devious Dreams grants—a collective of artists from all walks of life with a broad spectrum of creative ideas. Some of these deviants requested drawing tablets so they can create every day. Others asked for traditional art supplies, or photography tools to more efficiently create and share their art. Some asked for crafting supplies like sculpting or sewing materials. The projects each artist put forward were varied and inspired, and it’s our pleasure to help bring these dreams to life.Dream Recipients!
