Ripley's Unconventional Art Contest

Wed Aug 1, 2018, 1:25 PM
ripleys og by symonxThe DeviantArt/RipleyS #UnconventionalArtContest has run its course—check out the keenly creative winners and peruse the rest of the entries!

DeviantArt, in collaboration with Ripley's Believe It or Not!, wants you to break out of your creative norms and take part in the Unconventional Art Contest!

Inspired by Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odd Is Art, a book showcasing innovative art, we challenge you to change up your usual process and create pieces using unconventional means. From painting to sculptures and everything in between, undertake an artistic experiment and share what you come up with! Common materials can be used in daring new ways or odd items can be used to create something new.

Head and Torso

Anatomical cross-section recreated with mulberry paper and the gilded edges of old books using a technique called quilling.

Lisa Nilsson

The Royal Carriage

Made from a mixture of cornstarch, salt, and water.

Ash Elsayed

Using a mix of materials is encouraged. You could include items from around the house like yarn, sponges, or condiments. Trek outdoors to find bits of nature, or barter for items from a yard sale to work into your piece! Why not toss aside conventional tools like brushes and make a tool out of something unique? Embrace your imagination and think outside of the box!

25 Semi-Finalists will be chosen by a panel comprised of DeviantArt staff and an Independent Judge with the First, Second, and Third Place winners selected by a panel of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Executives & Talent (Brian Relic, VP of Design & Development; Amanda Joiner, Senior Director of Publishing; John Graziano, Cartoonist; Bruce Miller, Lead Artist).

First Place will win all-expense paid trips to Los Angeles and Orlando to visit the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium and World Headquarters Art Department, and more!

Prince

Part of the artist's ghost in the machine series, which sees portraits of pop culture icons recreated with audio cassette tapes or film reels.

Erika Simmons

1Step OneGet Inspired

Peruse the examples on the page and start thinking about the materials you want to use.

Matchstick Millennium Falcon

The famous starship from Star Wars recreated with 910,000 matchsticks and 26 gallons of glue. Brought to life with sound, lighting and movement.

Patrick Acton

Polished Painting

Painted with over 300 colors of nail polish using only the brushes provided with the bottles.

Mary Scott

Bathroom Reading

Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby Dick typed onto six rolls of toilet paper.

Dennis Malone

2Step TwoGet Your Weird On

Choose your materials and start creating! We encourage taking photos of your process to share via Journals.

3Step ThreeSubmit Your Artwork

Under "How to Enter," section g says "The work may not have been previously licensed, sold, used, published, released, distributed, or otherwise exploited in any form."

I'm fairly sure that submitting previously submitted works to DeviantArt counts as published, but why not try? The worst that can happen is having that entry not able to be considered for a prize, and it would not affect you :)

If anything, maybe try to submit your old work and make a new one as well for submission! (Unlimited entries are allowed, but no duplicates) :)
