SONIC RETOLD - Main Cover by glitcher SONIC RETOLD - Main Cover by glitcher
Come one, come all! Here it is at long last, the ‘secret project’ you’ve all been waiting for is..... *drum roll*..... a new Sonic webcomic! *fanfare.... church bells ring*

As you’ve probably guessed by now, this comic is a continuation of the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics before the “Worlds Collide” crossover. For a lot of you, this is a long time coming. Many readers can testify that the quality of Sonic comics has plunged narratively and (to some extent) artistically ever since the infamous reboot that wiped out most of the beloved characters inhabiting Mobius. It was an event from which the series never fully recovered, shackled by Sega’s mandates to make the story as bland and emotionally sterile as possible. To me, the final straw was the “Worlds Unite” crossover - intended purely as a marketing device in spite of a creative void. That’s when I got the idea for this story. I told myself one thing:

“If I want Sonic done right, I’ll just have to do it myself!” :eager:

So this is the result! I started working on the script back in September 2015. I wanted to write several issues in advance so that I have time to evaluate the narrative structure and make sure that themes and plot points are introduced early enough. (It was also during this time that I learned of the fan group Archie Sonic Online and their attempt to create a similar webcomic, but they’re following a different route for their story and we haven’t shared ideas.) Once I was assured of my script’s integrity, I started drawing the first issue in February. It’s been a difficult and exhausting year working on this in secret - especially since I didn’t have much personal art to share on my gallery during the interim - but I hope you find the wait worthwhile. :)

The main cover featured here was only completed last weekend. I wanted to gain more EXP drawing the pages before tackling something this complex. I’m a big fan of Drew Struzan’s artwork and I strived to paint my cover in the same style as his movie posters. (Coincidentally, my favourite Sonic cover is from issue #114, which is a parody of Struzan’s “Attack of the Clones” poster.) The Sonic comics are reputed for some memorable covers - mostly from Pat Spaz - so I wanted to do mine justice if I intend to continue the series during its heyday. I hope this conveys the scope and energy of the story and the first step towards rejuvenating the series with the depth, grit and heart it once had.

So here’s the schedule: Next Monday I’ll post the intro page + issue #1 cover, then I’ll upload one page every Monday thereafter.

Weekly updates gives me time to draw the next issue so that you don’t have to wait too long for its release. So stick around! This webcomic is a labour of love for one of my favourite comic series and an attempt to provide closure to longtime readers who want to see the loose ends of the original continuity tied up. What happened to Mecha Sally? What’s going on with the echidnas? Where did Bunnie go? How will the Freedom Fighters deal with Naugus and that mutated Tails Doll? All of these questions will be answered in “Sonic Retold”! Enjoy the read! :D

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to contact Dreamworks about the film rights.... B-)

This truly is a hell of an introduction for a web comic! Seeing it as a thumbnail it screamed "Star Wars" to me but seeing it in its full glory makes it so unique! Granted, that the main reason I clicked on this was because of Knuckles, every other character has been implemented into this so amazingly. No genuine nitpicks here just pure admiration. If the cover is looking this good I can't imagine what the comics will be like (coming from a guy who's not all for web comics). There has obviously been a lot of time and commitment put into this and it was well worth it. Buzzing for more info!

You’re man enough to take it, so I’ll let you earn your stars rather than detracting points, though I’m sure people will think I’m evil for it. (Generosity in critiques is for wimps!)

Vision -- Your consistent, unique style kept the narrative together (+1), the gradual increase of momentum that led up to the action sequences was impressive, and they themselves have plenty happening without being too busy per panel (+1). One thing I immediately noticed since page 1 was the background of the city itself, giving Albion an uncommon set of architecture with the large domes, arches and high walkways (+1). The atmosphere with the main bulk of story occurring at night cast a joyless light over the city until the battle begins, then the first signs of dawn become apparent along with hope that this venture will succeed (+1).

Originality -- The story took what I expected to be a straightforward plot, added several unexpected elements and a plot twist or two that surprised me (+1). I suspected early on that Thrash wouldn’t play a part, and just because I despised that cheap angle (since it reduced every single valiant effort on the part of Remington and his companions to a big fat load of nothing), I’ll give you extra kudos (+½). Minor improvements on the source material, such as fur colors, building designs and suitable settings, are themselves worthy of note and added just the right amount of detail to take me as a reader into the scenes (+1). The fight against Lien-Da played out well (though the “shock” pun made me cringe), not dragging on while at the same time making the clash physical and mental, but unfortunately it lost some power when you went for a “distract element” all too often used by villains to escape (+½).

Technique -- I loved the more individual designs for echidnas, especially since it gave them personality without speaking and most were just featured once or twice (+1). Your choice of panelization made the pages easy to digest since the format was often simple, yet on closer analysis I started to notice the slight changes in shape/angle depending on the action or dialogue therein (+1). Every page contained something important to the narrative, even in the beginning where the young echidna is doing nothing but running away (+1). Unfortunately I have to say there were several poses that came across as too stiff. I can’t tell if it’s how the characters were leaning/not leaning or if the angle threw me off, but they simply felt unnatural (-½). I can give examples if you like.

Impact -- There were four key moments where the force of this comic really came through. I found Lara-Le’s fierce attitude terrific since she was presented more as a leader than an icon whose power came from her station as Knuckle’s mother (+1). The battle against Lien-Da changed from your typical boss-fight into something quite personal when Sally was brought up (+1). Komi-Ko’s death and especially Remington’s reaction to it struck deep chords with me and most likely every reader (+2). Eggman’s central pose and speech (with Lien-Da’s shock and “I’m doomed!” face back there) was perfectly in character while also giving a ton of weight to the end of the issue (+1).

This is the comic us Sonic fans deserve and need, not the repetitive gimmicky Post-Forces stuff from IDW.

Too bad most of them just accepts the unexplained and mediocrity like that and defends flaws for the sake of it. Its why Sonic will never improve and stay great again. Sega inconsistencies, fans ignorance and also Penders ruining the comics line over some bogus copyright when he straight up pulled the same stunt creating Scourge; a glorified recolor of Sonic that begun the most disturbing trend in DA. Never underestimate a fan's drive to save a franchise. Especially freakin SEGA. More power to you. This cover looks amazing by the way, but I'm sure you already know that.

This is freaking Awesome!! Now I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that to me the reboot universe was decent, like the return of the black arms and Eclipse. The updated desings for the Freedom Fighters were amazing and it had good stories!

The Egg Army, their take on Sonic Unleashed, there are things to love about the Post-Super Genesis Wave continuity, but I'm still going to enjoy this AND the take of Archie Sonic Online, you should go and check it out!

I'm so glad I found this! The reboot pretty much destroyed my world when it happened, because I was so attached to all the ongoing storylines. I'm so glad that there are people who pick up the slack now. There is FinikArt with their brilliant "Heroes come back", which details the continued adventures of the Secret Freedom Fighters, and now I've found you, and your own take on the main team's exploits. This is so awesome!:dummy:
Now I only need someone who continues the Dragon Kingdom storylines, and then I can die happy. ;D Just kidding, this is already more than I could've possibly asked for.

I'm glad someone is keeping original Sonic Comics alive. Maybe You can u a Thundercats 2011 continuation, because we demanded a season 2 in comic form, maybe even revealing revamping supporting characters that we never get a chance to see in the Reboot like Willa and the warrior maidens , Mumm-Rana, Hachiman, Safari Joe , Lunataks, etc, etc. We need to see how the Thundercats end their quest to find the final power stone and to Defeat Mumm-Ra, and see Pumyra to get what's coming to her. Maybe Finding lion-o and future queen (personally I'm Lion-O/Willa shipper). I hope You have to courage to do it one day, but it's been too long. Please, this underappreciated hidden gem deserves a conclusion. But if you refuse to do that for any reason, I understand.

Ha! I would love a conclusion to Thundercats as much as anyone. I'm just as disappointed that the cartoon was cancelled prematurely, leaving Lion-O's quest for the power stones in limbo. However, I have enough on my plate to deal with as it is and couldn't possibly devote the time to creating a separate comic for this. Maybe some day it will get done, but it won't be by me. I'll still be eager to read it. ^^;

You should ask yourself "Who didn't we lose?" We still have the game characters, the Freedom Fighters, plus King Max, Naugus, Lupe and Uncle Chuck from the cartoon... but pretty much everyone else is gone. The echidnas, Geoffrey, Hershey, Mina Mongoose, Monkey Khan, Regina Ferrum and the four houses, the fire ants, plus any additional family members like Sonic and Tails' parents or Sally's mother and brother. They're all gone! It's not just the loss of these characters that kills the comic, the stories are so bland with formulaic Emerald hunts and whatnot. The reboot isn't worth your time - or anyone's.

I'm actually writing my own (non-published and won't be for quite a while) spin on the Archie Sonic mythos that takes the old continuity and mashes it up with the new one. It's called Sonic Adventure (SLAGIATT) and I've been thinking about it since 6th grade in 2014. I hope it turns out good...

...then again, it's also a P&F-style musical, so all bets are off.

But it-

No.

You're trying your best to make it not cring-

SHUT UP.

It contains covers of Sonic BGM-

That's the cringy part, Einstein!
