Beautiful! (Not trying to be a smart arse, but if the cable is made of carbon nanotubes would it really reflect light? Just wondering cos I'm considering doing some artwork of theoretical architecture myself, lol)

I think the biggest problem with the space elevator is that we need to construct it from the top down.

A space elevator needs four main components...the anchor (planetside base), the strand, the orbital (the satellite part which acts as the "second floor" docking station and holds the upper end of the strand) and the vehicle that moves up and down the strand.

Once you have a geostationary platform, you start building a light foundation strand going down.  The strand will be blown about in winds until it can be caught on the ground and fixed to an anchor station.  After that, you use the foundation strand as a template and guide to build the working strand.

I wonder if what you have here is the vehicle (in transit) or the orbital (holding geosynchronous orbit with enough slack to move up and down the strand to adjust for load on the elevator).  Either way, it's a very good concept.

This is majestic and gorgeous. I love the texture on the cable, too.

This is awesome. I'm afraid of heights, so it would be my luck to get halfway up and either get stuck or for it to snap. Ahhhhhhhhhhh! :D (Big Grin)

A beautiful image, phenomenal detail. Just to let you know, I have used this image in a blog post I've written about space elevators. I write a little blog about science in general. I have credited you and linked back to this page. The post will appear by lunchtime tomorrow London time. I hope that's okay.…

Beautiful and inspiring-- let's build a freakin' space elevator!

There are several companies that do.
Most are atm hampered by the lack of easily producable carbon nanotube cables or another material of comparable strength that'll dissipate into dust in the atmosphere if an accident should cut the tether.

But yes: Engineering problems can be solved and getting stuff into orbit doesn't get much more eco friendly than with a space elevator. Well, and cheaper...

Fantastic! If I thought the previous view over Mars was breathtaking, this tops it and takes my opinion to the word 'gorgeous'. Its a very awe inspiring image.

Awesome piece! I'd love to live to see a space elevator built... but I don't think I'll happen. At the very least, I hope I get to see the first person set foot on Mars.

No, that not vertigo-inducing at ALL.

Even with its enourmous size you can bet from the Earth's point of view it's little more than a stray hair sticking out :XD: I like how it shows it has the ability to bend too, which is bound to happen :)

You chose a great perspective.  Viewed at full size it not only looks fantastic, it even kicks in my fear of heights.

Thanks for the link as well -- the whole 23rd Luminarium is a pleasure to peruse, but I think the realism of this piece sets it apart.

Really like this mate

Beautiful piece of work  beautiful colour structure and detail in the background and the woven tube of the elevator itself looks very convincing as does what looks like a small way-station on the elevators journey.
