It seems somehow fitting that my first journal entry be about one of my all time favorite video game series, that of "Mass Effect". After 40 hours or so of gameplay, last night I finished Mass Effect 3. I won't give away any story elements here because I hate spoilers, but I will say today I am on a total downer.

When you've invested around 150+ hours in a video game franchise, you hope for and expect the best and as developers BioWare rarely fail the gamer in this respect, but this time they failed horribly. This isn't a whiny post about me not getting my 'happy' ending, though that would have been nice, this is about continuity, a lack of 'choice', something the entire franchise runs on... this is about nonsensical outcomes.

As I said I won't be covering story here, I don't want to spoil it for anyone still playing. Be prepared for plot-holes aplenty. This is where this entire debacle makes no sense to me, surely the devs and even play testers stopped for a moment and thought.. hold on, this isn't right, we've screwed up the entire canon by these events. Apparently not, apparently everyone just went along with the whole silly thing.

You might argue this is good for BioWare, that the reason so many people are talking about the ending is because we're hurt, which in turn means we are emotionally connected, and to a point that's true, but with this emotional connection should come a responsibility by the developer not to let us down and this time, they did, with a thud.

I feel devastated and cheated and I am not alone.

other than continuity being bad...is the game good, as a stand alone? like if someone has never played a ME game would they understand or enjoy this?? the first i played was the second game, looks good etc but i still havent been engrossed or whatever the term is

i think uncharted 2 was the last game i actually cared about anyone and everyone and everythin tht happened (shouldve cared more about the people in arkham city but didnt :( )

The Mass Effect franchise is amazing, regardless of how sh-t it seemingly ended. I would start at the beginning if possible and if not, jump in anyway, though it won't have the same power if you haven't played all of them as it remembers your interactions and events all the way through.

Uncharted is awesome. Mass Effect is more conversation based.

a while ago i thought of editin different games together, like havin footage of femshep on the ship by the nav thing, and thn footage of fps games, cuttin between both as if the shep is talkin to em....obs i would have to have audio tht would make sense to go between em both
GirlyGamerAU's avatar
haha that sounds like a cool idea, I bet the editing would take ages though. I bet you could get some dead funny conversations going if you had the time.

if i kept original audio...conversations would be messed up lol femshep talking about one thing, cuts to say masterchief and hes talkin about the covenant or something lol
GirlyGamerAU's avatar
I bet someone with a lot of time though could splice actual conversations together, well more so from Shep because it's so dialogue driven, whereas Chief doesn't say too much.

i only used the masterchief as an example

last few days been playing gears
played the mp tutorial, but had music on, but i heard soem girl talking, i was thinknig of using that as an example for sound, splice between the action and shep or some other character in a comms room

I wonder if they'll patch anything with a DLC...
GirlyGamerAU's avatar
That's the rumor.. in fact the latest seems to be BioWare suggesting they had the DLC planned all along, though that sounds more like PR damage control than truth.
Hellwolve's avatar
Ofcourse they had it planned all along, it's BioWare we're talking about ;)
GirlyGamerAU's avatar
Haha of course, that being the case, they really should have thought about how all the negative feedback would affect them before going ahead with it lol. I've still got my fingers crossed they do the right thing.
Hellwolve's avatar
The latest news could indicate they'll actually do that. They've gone on record stating there will be more closure - but how that goes, is everyone's guess.
GirlyGamerAU's avatar
... and they'll charge us all for the closure no doubt lol I hope not, but it wouldn't be surprising.

Truth to be told, I wouldn't be surprised, either. In their defence...if there's new work done, someone needs to pay the people doing that new work ;)
