Pencil Tutorial by Girl-on-the-Moon Pencil Tutorial by Girl-on-the-Moon
By popular demand, how I do my pencil portraits!

Enjoy, and, it's really late, so forgive any spelling/logic mistakes in the tutorial and please point them out to me if you could. Just please check in the comments to see if someone else has already said it.

Um.... OH. And the drawing in the tutorial is this one over here:

I like that you don't knock tracing (like my painting teacher does)

Cool tutorial! It's really helpful for highlights in the face and hair!  ^^
I also like how you mention that you trace guidelines for your drawing. I do this myself, usually only with important bits like the general shape of the face and position of the eyes, so that the eyes don't end up too close together or the nose too far up. Not many people admit that. :) (I don't over do it though, my art must still contain my soul! :D)

I have to do a project inspired by another artist for my Studio Art class.
I've had an unfinished portrait of my grandmother sitting around... I think I'll finish it and do this with it, because you're really inspiring!

I love that you're not afraid to tell us that you loosely trace, to get started; Everyone is always afraid to say that because they don't realize nothing is ever original.
ART IS THEFT.

Thanks for this simple tutorial, just wanted to let you know it works perfectly with Paint Shop Pro 5X as well (I'm too poor to own PS). I'm going to give it a whirl in ArtRage as well, I think it will work there, too. ArtRage is my poor-starving-artist substitute for Corel Painter, giving it a free test.

I uploaded my results... not as good as yours, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. For one thing, your scanned drawings are more sparse than mine... because I was trying to achieve those mid-tones by using cross-hatching, not having any digital additions in mind at the time. Thanks for sharing your art and tutorials, love everything I've seen in your gallery :D

Oop, I started doing something similar after seeing your drawings where you'd mixed digital and traditional BUUUUT didn't really know how you'd done it so I have a very different (and possibly somewhat redundant in some places) method now.

[link] thoughts would be very much appreciated.

HUH. Well, it looks good!
I've never used GIMP before, so I don't really know if a lot of what you're doing IS redundant. If you don't have brushes that can mimic pencil, then using transparency to retain the traditional look is a good move.
I like it. I like all of it. Keep it up.

I've been working on portraits of the current Doctor Who cast, but i can't scan 'em into my computer because the only scanner in my house is anciently shitty. They loose all the detail and shading. What scanner do you have? :?

A Canon... thing. I've always had a pretty standard printer/scanner 2-in-1. This one is a newer model (this year's I think), but, nothing fancy. Most of my art was scanned with my old scanner, which was like five years old. I'd really make sure your scanner isn't applying any auto adjustments, that can really screw with how nice it looks. And scan at 300 dpi, of course.

That's the problem; it won't even scan at that. We have an old HP all-in-one thing which my brother spilt water over, and since then the scan quality is at its lowest possible. Which is extremely very not good. Typically, everything else is still functioning perfectly. We've been trying to decide between a few different types of scanner, but most people either use or recommend Canon :D

Well, I have to say, I'm very happy with my Canon. Much better quality than my old HP.
Sad about your HP though... I'd recommend Canon for sure.

I definitely need to try this. I tried a digital painting of Ten once (when I had an old version of Corel Painter) and I was ok with it, but not happy. I have MyPaint now and it's alot like Corel Painter :D

Oh, thank Rassilon I found this! I've been wondering about these for ages!

Just a quick question, when you're doing the sketch, how do you trace the guidelines? Do you eye it or just put the paper directly over the reference and trace it?
