Doctor Who - Sunsets are Cool

I am UNSPEAKABLY proud of this one. 8D
If you don't mind my saying so.

Hours and hours in Photoshop, original pencils by Jeremy Dale and inks and colours by me.

Lighting is FUN! And hey, comments and criticism on the technical elements would make me happy inside.

Added 'Doctor Who' in the title to help out DeviantART's crappy search engine system. Hopefully.

Original pencils:

Colourable inks:

Firstly, I have to commend you on the texturing on the tweed jacket - it was really the first thing that hit me, for some reason. It looks like it could have just been a texture stock downloaded from the web, but you've worked with it so perfectly that I can't be sure!

Ever-positive, I have lots of good things to say about this and not many bad things (It's just how I roll.)

Firstly, it looks like it could have been done by a professional comic artist, and in my eyes you are a professional comic artist! This kind of skill only comes with years of practice, and I think all of us can see that practice first-hand in your gallery. I'm honestly wondering why none of your work has gone up for a DD, if it hasn't already gone up for one. Many of us enjoy SftT but there's as much enjoyment in the rest of your works, and this is just one of the fine examples.

Now, the lighting. Such a command of lighting and shading is brilliance in itself, and reminds me so much of the lighting and shading on 3D renderings! Mainly because every bit of dark and light is in the right place, but it's still super awesome.

I know the lineart belongs to someone else, but you've made it your own and it's brilliant. I did tell you I had lots of good things to say about this, and it seems I can't find any bad things. I just... I think many of us aspire to be this good, and it's always within our reach if we just practice and learn from others, and this is one of the great teachers. No more with conforming lines and flat colours! This is where it's at.

I don't do many critiques as I can only see the good in everyone's works and some people prefer to be told the bad, but I just had to critique this as soon as I saw it, even if my critique is just a load of babble about how good this is!

Aw shucks... thank you for the sweetest critique I think I've ever gotten. :)
And no, I've never been up for a DD.

That is my only reply. And thanks for approving my critique!

:iconiseewhatudidthereplz: <--- and that. That's my other reply, because I'm currently watching 'Futurama: Welcome to the World of Tomorrow' and I like Fry.
Amy: I love sunsets.
Eleventh doctor: sunsets are majestic.
Rory: can we go back in the Tardis before the Daleks show up, and it gets dark?

Question, if you could, would you redraw this with the weeping angle of liberty (the one that took over the statue) in the background?
Girl-on-the-Moon's avatar
WELL, if I did that, I'd want to change their outfits to be episode accurate too and that'd be a lot of work. I kinda like it as it is.

hey has anyone ever noticed that the tardis says "PULL TO OPEN". but almost every single time, the doctor or companion or anyone really, just pushes it open? Is it like, one of those doors that opens both ways? if thats the case then why have instructions on which way to open it?

This is so awesome! I love the expression on Rory's face XD

The texturing on the Doctor's jacket is impressive!

I also really love the lighting. The TARDIS is all glowy XD

Seriously amazing!! Or as the 9th Doctor would say "Abosutely Fantastic!"

Hey, just wondering if you would like to do an art trade sometime? I'm afraid I can only draw animals and human females (male heads are so hard to draw!) and am only really good at traditional art, so you can just ignore this if you want to. Sorry for the spam!
Girl-on-the-Moon's avatar
Hey there! Afraid I don't have the time for art trades. :(
I've got University, DWR, SFTT and other sketches and projects on my To Do list these days, and I don't want to be adding to it.

Oh, it's okay. Sorry to waste your time.

You did not put the Statue of Liberty in the background with Amy and Rory.

Oh my; where to start? I really admire the quality here, and the obvious work put into it.. that's sometimes hard to find in collaborations like these.

Probably the biggest part of this picture that draws me in is the color variety and the tones; you've mastered a wonderful range of values and, to me, that's always delightful to find. Especially with the absence of lines in the background, and the colored ones on the characters (which is a technique that I love, albeit hard to pull off at times) I think the interplay between lighting and colors is very well done.

The characterizations are also something I'd like to applaud; I appreciate the balance between caricature and realism here, particularly the expressions, which are complex but don't try too hard to capture specific features. Ughhh I'm trying so hard to type this properly and maturely or something but the coloring and their hair and those clouds and the tweed--I give up! There's just something about your art that's whimsical and thoughtful and faceted and different that draws me in and keeps me there, looking for that one little detail I missed.

Really, if I were to nitpick anything, it'd be the lack of significant texturing on the TARDIS' body, but, honestly? The simplicity of the background against the complexity of the foreground is sort of what balances the composition out... I've got nuthin'.

Thank you for a marvelous illustration, and a good day to you! :rose:
