Folks this is a giant pic, and it is here to illustrate one thing.

There is no shortcut.
This is 18 years of me drawing cartoons of myself. I thought about doing different subjects that I’ve drawn, but turns out I’m self obsessed and what I drew most from about the age of 15 was me. This is 18 years of me practicing anatomy, and line and colouring, and body language. 18 years of me trying out stuff and seeing if it worked or not (it did not always work). 18 years of developing style.

Sometimes I think I did okay and sometimes I think I suck, I can nearly always tell you about 20 things I could have done better. I’ll remember them for next time. Some people learn quicker than me, there are teens who can draw much better than me. That’s irrelevant, what matters is that I keep trying to improve what I can do.

See you in another 18 years and I’ll tell you all the things I still need to learn, and how I still have so many things to practice.

This is a really amazing way to encapsulate and demonstrate that progress of art.  I recognize that I never put enough effort into drawing to really get anywhere, and just live with that fact - as you say, there are no short-cuts

thanks for the comments- I saw a lot of DA memes that were about showing off your art progress or redrawing an old piece, but I often feel that shows off the best a person could do at any one time, whereas I wanted to capture a range of things from doodles to finished pieces

It's a very 'living' montage, and I totally approve of that thinking.  It feels like we get to see something of YOU over time rather than just a portfolio of curated pieces, as a 'best of' would be.
