Yes anyone that knows me knew I was going to see this movie.
Being a massive fan of the Manga Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro an the two part OVA.
And yes I did like the Ghost in the Shell live action movie but it wasnt great had a lot that it missed..
Yes I had some high hopes for Battle Angel and knew they had a LOT of material to work with and couldnt possibly cover in 2 hours. But did marveliously gel together a movie that had hit the marks that made the manga great. Thankfully they toned down some things that were shown in the original teaser (:cough cough: Altia's eyes) that would have absolutely been way too distracting with everything else going on.
Hitting all the marks when it came to the scrapyard city and the dystopian world with Utopia hovering over head oppressing all those beneath. The levels of society the cyborgs of various types and builds showing just how the scraps have been used down to some of the peace meal cyborgs and normal humans going about there lives with the all mighty oppressive overlords looking down from high above.
The expensive looking racing cyborgs and well geared Hunter Warriors that can afford the best and others just trying to survive without thieves stripping them down for parts.
Having taken the relationship from the Anime and extrapolating it out. Wonderful character development and the feel was energetic with moments of peace to break up the action which some of the fights are so fast and violent you dont dare blink else you know you would miss too much. Especially during the motor ball segment (for those unfamilar imagine Roller derby at 120mph mixed in with full contact arena fighting with a healthy addition of nascar and demolition derby)
This could go for 2-3 more movies easilly and do look forward to seeing more. If your a manga fan dont harsh the white washing that has been fuming through so many talked about movies that have come up and may or may not go into production. One of the things about manga is that the characters are done ususally simply to interject yourself into your favorite chatacter which is one of the things that drew me into Manga in the first place.
Long story short this is a good movie.. amazingly well done action sequences and the story is well done cobbled together from many of the books and flows well. The designs were amazing and could be the geekette in me but was looking at everything wide eyed wanting to see more.
