As the day’s sun disappears behind a Travis County forest filled with dead trees, a frail womanly figure staggers out from the woods edge and franticly moves towards the dirt road. She’s confused and desperation fills her eyes as she stumbles through a clearing only to catch her foot on a raised root and fall to the parched ground. As night falls so does the days chance for rain and this cracked Texas ground that hasn't tasted a single drop in weeks might as well be concrete when falling on it. The drought that’s encompassed the area for years has taken its toll on both the earth and sanity of the people here. What used to be a popular last stop for spring breakers has been reduced to a crumbling shell of its former self. And even as night falls, the hundred degree temperatures remain. Rising up from the sun baked ground she hears the faint sound of an engine and sees in the distance a single light barreling down the old county road, approaching quickly yet so far away.
Girl: It's the police! It has to be.
As the engine nears she races towards the road and stops short to make sure it's clear.
Girl: No one but that light and that sound.
As she observes the headlight she begins to realize that whatever or whomever it is, is too far away but she waves for help hysterically. She tries to call out to the stranger but only a coarse, barely audible sound erupts from her bleeding lips. Stopping to rest for a minute she begins to pinpoint the direction in which the engine sound is coming from. Behind her in the woods is a monstrous being, concealed from view by trees, who approaches fiercely and with heavy footsteps. The sounds of snapping tree limbs are barely surpassed by the encompassing engine noise. From the woods emerges what has pushed her to complete exhaustion, an ogreish man that has crashed through the Texas thicket, wielding a brutal chainsaw and slashing it through the air. She panics and darts further up the road. The moon has risen above the tree line now and you can see the light reflect off the blood that covers her face, crimson in color she's completely covered in it. Wrapped around her head is her brothers soaked bandanna that she managed to pull off while trying to grab him from the monsters fiendish grasp. Fearing for her life she runs toward the light pleading for whomever it is to get there faster.
Silence cuts through the air louder than her pleas for help and her fleeing footsteps.
She pauses thinking she got away and turns to discover the noise is gone as is the tyrant. With her eyes swollen from crying, she makes it to the side of the road and ducks behind some dry brush to try and conceal herself.
She can hear his boots approaching and as they come closer she lies waiting paralyzed by fear. For the first time she sees that its him, the one who attached the vehicle to the old man’s tow truck. He butchered her parents and grabbed her baby brother while on their way to the lake. It was tangled barbed wire that put them on the side of the road with a flat. It was their tow truck that offered to take them into town to use the phone while they fixed the wheel. Remembering that she snickered to her brother that she's seen this movie before and that her father snapped at her for being so rude. Such trivial thoughts to be having now, but they are calming her breathing. She can see him through the shrubbery now. He stops mid stride and unfastens a chain from his left side. Not sure of what he’s doing she leans forward to have a better look.
A metal shark? She thought.
!Crack! The sound of imminent death.
Who knew that dead twigs can bring unspeakable horror. Knowing that she has been found she rises quickly only to come face to face with her pursuant. She’s eyeing the bear trap that he is now carrying as the two stand facing each other, she pleads for him not to kill her. It’s obvious she’s exhausted and doesn't have it in her to run anymore. The man breathes deeply and with a heave starts swinging his horrific trap.
The stranger is getting closer now and she can hear the roar of the motorcycle engine. Her body’s last shot of adrenaline rushes through her, giving her the strength to take off running, only to be violently stopped short by the bear trap closing around her shoulders and head. Her body lies twitching as a gurgled noise comes from the flesh that resides in the traps teeth. As the monster drags her body closer to his feet he eyes the approaching light in the distance, opting to dispose of her before any more confrontations. He drags her off the road and into the woods, leaving behind a thick trail of blood. Just beyond the tree line awaits his transport. He flings her body onto the back of the tow truck and slaps the wheel well signaling for the driver to go. The clutch grinds as its taillights disappear into the darkness. With no time to deal with the mess the masked man hides along the tree line, cloaked by darkness, waiting for the stranger to arrive.
