Tut: Cleaning scanned lineart. by GhostLiger Tut: Cleaning scanned lineart. by GhostLiger
Since I hit 6k recently I couldn't think what to do for a kiriban, so, since a couple of people asked me about it, I figured I'd do a tutorial of how to colour scanned linearts without having to trace over all the lines in Photoshop.

This Tutorial was done using Photoshop CS2 and should also work for CS and CS3 as well

Unfortunately Photoshop Elements does not seem to have the options to do this and I'm afraid I have no experience in other art programs, although Open Canvas 4.5e Plus does seem to have the levels adjustment, but I don't think it has the channels tab.

But anyway, I'm allowing downloads on this for people to save for future refs, but please only save by clicking the download button, not by right clicking. If you right click it will save as a blank file.

Enjoy! :D And thank you everyone, for all the Pageviews!

Disclaimer: L and Death Note copyright to Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

Tutorial put together by me using images drawn by me (Except for the screenshot of L holding a piece of paper) using guidelines I in turn learnt from the book "The Art of Drawing Manga" by Ben Krefta

I found this helpful but I'm still having promblems when I get to the part when you have to colour it black. For some reason it won't colour at all, no colour appears. Do you know what I'm doing wrong please?

Are you having problems colouring the lines back or is it when you're trying to colour the rest of the picture?

No probs! Yeah I know the feeling. It's tough to get used to the fact that your eyes have to be on the computer screen rather than the pen.

Keep your pencil nice and sharp, use a good quality rubber/eraser (I use a putty rubber - aka kneeded eraser) and try to avoid resting your hand on the picture during drawing if you can (I know this isn't always possible though).

Mostly though I still get a few smudges here and there, but I ink over the lines, and then rub over the whole picture with the rubber (Though if yours is one that smudges this ain't advisable). Then the scanner settings take care of the rest.

Hope that helps :aww:
