I've been stalking this Southern Crowned Pigeon (Goura scheepmakeri) for a while now, just to get a shot of that gorgeous crest.

And yes, you've read it correctly, this is a pigeon, and not just any pigeon but a 75 cm (29 in) 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) pigeon. Quite easily the king of pigeons so to speak, they wear their crown with aplomb :)

Sadly, this gorgeous critter is currently vulnerable to extinction, with a population anywhere between 10,000 to 20,000 that is steadily declining. Native to Papua New Guinea they were being hunted for food (it's a sizable bird after all) and poached for its feathers.

Fortunately, conservation work is underway, they are now protected by law and education and research programmes are planned as far to little is still know about this gorgeous pigeon. They are quite curious and amicable in captivity, very much what you'd expect from a pigeon.

Please don't hesitate to comment on what you like (or dislike) about the picture, any feedback is appreciated. Don't worry though, I won't kill ya if you fav+run.

Gorgeous photo! So terrible that it's endangered, hopefully their numbers will steadily increase over time!

Unfortunately they're currently still declining in population. They've been going downhill for years, were marked as threatened in 1988 and put on the vulnerable list since 1994. Sadly, these birds are to friendly for their own good and hardly fear humans. The good news is, there are captive breeding programmes under way in several zoos and they are now protected by law in Papua New Guinea.

That bird has a very interesting "headdress" I don't think I've ever seen this species before.

My neither to be honest, they're massive pigeons, especially when they fly (they're surprisingly quick in the air); there's only three different kinds world-wide, this one, one with a similar crest but less colours on the chest (the common) and one with brushes at the end of their crest (the Victorian) the latter are the most beautiful.

Very odd bird! I've never seen one of those before. But this is a gorgeous shot!

It is by far the largest pigeon I've ever seen (and I do believe the largest pigeon species around the globe). Their crest is pretty stunning up close and they sure like showing it off :D

you sure get close to these birds...

I do, I meet them halfway really. I position myself somewhere strategic and then exercise as much patience I can muster so that they feel comfortable coming closer. This one was about 1.5 - 2 metres away.

I ordered a telephoto lens which should be arriving in a few days, that should make things a bit easier. I can't wait :excited:
