The Dodge Challenger was originally introduced as a pony car in 1970. It rode on Chrysler's E body platform, which it shared with the Plymouth Cuda. However, the Challenger arrived a little late to the pony car party, and was discontinued by 1974. The Challenger reappeared as a badge-engineered variant of the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda in 1978. This version was produced until 1983. The modern Challenger entered production in 2008. The Challenger used many components from Mercedes-Benz's parts bins, including front suspension based off of the W220 S Class, the 5-link rear suspension based on the E Class, the rear differential, and the available 5-speed automatic transmission. Engine offerings were a naturally-aspirated SOHC 3.5L V6, the naturally-aspirated OHV 5.7L Hemi V8, and the naturally-aspirated OHV 6.1L Hemi V8. Transmission offerings were the 5-speed W5A580 automatic (which is a variant of the Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic automatic) and the 6-speed Tremec TR6060 manual. The Challenger was only offered with rear wheel drive. 2011 brought along a few changes. The 3.5L V6 was replaced by the naturally-aspirated DOHC 3.6L Pentastar V6 and the 6.1L Hemi V8 grew to a displacement of 6.4L. 2012 saw the base trim level name change from SE to SXT. For the 2014 model year, the 5-speed automatic transmission was replaced by three different 8-speed automatics (the 845RE, the 8HP70, and the 8HP90). 2015 saw changes such as a new grille, a functional hood air intake, a new 8-speed automatic transmission, a 7-inch reconfigurable gauge cluster, an 8.4-inch center touch screen, and two SRT versions, the SRT 392 and the SRT Hellcat, the king of all modern muscle cars. The SRT Hellcat is powered by the all-new supercharged OHV 6.2L Hemi V8. For 2017, a new GT AWD model was introduced. The GT AWD is only offered with all wheel drive, making it the first production all-wheel drive car in its segment. The GT AWD is only available with the Pentastar V6. For the 2018 model year, the SRT Demon arrived, which was the most powerful car in its segment. For the 2019 model year, the SXT trim gained the option of all wheel drive, a factory widebody kit became available on some higher-performance trims, and two new models (SRT Hellcat Redeye and Scat Pack 1320) were unveiled. Seen in the showroom of a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealership in Prescott, AZ.
