Edited/ a mythological description for Leshy added.

happy earth day folks!! remember, our planet is only one and we have to take care of our house, our little blue planet.

blue is my favorite color :)

Let´s wikiattack!

The Leshy or Lesovik is a spirit in Slavic mythology who protects wild animals and forests. There are also leshachikha/leszachka (wives of the leshak) and leshonky (children of the leszy). He is roughly analogous to the Woodwose of Western Europe and the Basajaun of the Basque Country.

Leshy is the protector of all animals and birds in the forest. Mass migration of animals supposedly happens at leshy's instruction. Is said to have the ability to shapeshift into any form, animal or plant. In some tales, appears to visitors as a large talking mushroom. It can also vary in size, shrinking himself to the height of a blade of grass when moving through open fields, or growing to the size of the tallest trees when in the forest.

If a person befriends a leshy, the latter will teach them the secrets of magic. Leshies could be terribly mischievous beings: they have horrible cries, and can imitate voices of people familiar to wanderers and lure them back to their caves, where the leshies will tickle them to death; they also remove signs from their posts. Leshies aren't evil: although they enjoy misguiding humans, they are also known to keep grazing cattle from wandering too far into the forests and getting lost.

edit, thanks to :iconpaullell: for a description :) :
if I remember correctly Leshy is a Russian legend. A forest creature that lives in the hearts of the oldest trees and steps out into the open to defend the forest from those that would do it harm. They have been known to lead lost women and children out of the woods and tend to do rather gruesome things to those that intend harm to the forest or innocent creatures within it.

Леший - это же мужчина, по одному названию понятно! Но даже если представить, что это лешачиха - довольно странно для неё разгуливать по лесу в чулках, не так ли?

She reminds Lesavka much more (the spirit of forest trees and leaves). Leshiy looks like an old man in the clothes of fur, bark or moss, and he is not a good person. Moreover, he is a very malicious person, but like the most part of slavic demons, he can help to the protagonist. However in real life, then you're lost in forests, they say even now, 'Не иначе леший водит' (Seems, Leshiy guides you). You aren't safe of his magic even if you help the forest (stop the fire, save animals, cure trees, remove garbage like old bottles or plastic bags etc). There are some ways to get rid of Leshiy's magic: you have to sing (very loud), or put your clothes on the wrong side. And I have no idea where did you read about that Leshiy can teach anybody his magic, because he never did it in our fairytales. His only help is to find the way or a good advice.
What about Lesavka, she's more positive (or better say 'neutral'), than Leshiy, but she's very shy and secretive. She guards trees and small creatures, and never appears to humans. Then at autumn the falling leaves are swirling in the air, they say, Lesavka dances before the winter.

Apparently the whole turning clothes over thing is a recurring prevention for malkadee in folklore no matter where you live.

The edit to the description is closer to the myth

but Leshy is really supposed to be a cross between an Ent and Bigfoot in appearance and a troll in behavior. It's a shady creature that considers forests its own and is in fact rather bad. I haven't ever heard of Leshis doing good things in the fairy tales, on the contrary their M.O. is to lead people in circles until those people become hopelessly lost in the forest.

Well, I don't really think this describes the Slavic creature at all (my mom has a Slavic Folklore PhD - before any of you bash me for my opinion), so I do know what I'm talking about. However, the art is very nice, more of a druid to me, to be honest.

It's more Polish, I think ^^ The legend survived in Polish traditions up to the XIX century, when a leszy helped a Polish deserter run away from Tsar army. He is still visualized as a man in a forest ranger uniform
