I let this one drag out because I was procrastinating a whole lot!! But it is finished now. The scan has lost some of the detail, but its the best I can do with my scanner.

You rarely use a rubber? That is amazing, you have amazing foresight. How much do you plan ahead your drawings?

I find that when you use a rubber, it changes the surface texture of the paper and drawing over top never looks right again. The paper I used is generally fairly textured.
Usually I don't really have a plan when I start a drawing, more an idea. My technique is really just layering up my shadows. Means some drawings can take a while I guess, also means if I've gone too far on a drawing I usually lose interest in it and don't finish!

I does indeed, I find that it creates a nasty glossy effect and stains the page, but despite that I'm still dependant on rubbers lol. Your art is exquistie though, all the more so when you say you don't plan ahead. It's amazing, I find more and more that I have to with natural media. Except for oils, I love just splashing away with oils. You must have amazing patience for your drawings. Truly awe inspiring. :)

i allready commented on this awhile back but i have a question i want to ask you. i am working on a pic of my niece and i was wondering do you have any wips or something with how you did the braids? i drew her once before but it was my first portrait so it didnt turn out right. now that i am a little better i decided to do it over. the first try at the braids i did looks like a rope. and the reference photo i am using isnt that big so the hair is a little fuzzy. if you could help, then thanks. if not, thanks anyway. :)

Not sure if I have any WIP's but will have a look in the next few days. If you look at the full view of the pic you'll see that there is actually very little detail in the braids, one of my biggest problems when drawing is doing hair too quickly. I am no expert, but I would suggest focusing on the shapes and shadows, rather than the fibres that make up braids. I used a soft mechanical pencil and just adjusted my pressure around the bigger parts of each section of braid. Also adding in fly-aways and wisps of hair will give it a bit more effect.
Will post some WIPs if I can find them!
Hope this helps, as I said I am no expert!! :)
