A wasp landed on his hand. Or, what remained of his hand. Even after all these years, his first instinct was to wave it off. This time, he restrained himself. It waved it's antennas. An old beekeeper once told him, that this was how they found their way. He still remembered the faint scent of flowers and honey in her breath. It was the first memory he had, that was not of his childhood home. He had stared in awe, as an entire swarm of bees landed on her. He was terrified at first. He had never been stung by a bee, but his older sister had. She was tough as nails, even as a child. But she wept as if she had been flogged. The beekeeper had just smiled, as the bees all but covered her. Her soothing calmness passed on to him, and he had let some of the bees land on his hand and arm. Since that moment, he had loved bees. Wasps? Now, that was a different matter. As kind as bees had always been to him, he had barely learned how to string a fishing hook, when he got stung by a wasp. He was

ZOMA | Prologue

[DEVIATION] Eight year old José has always been curious about what the inside of the run down building situated in the middle of his charming suburban neighborhood contains. Now, in the pleasant light of an early spring afternoon, José stands in front of rusty wire fencing that surrounds this mysterious building. His eyes are red from crying, and his legs throb with pain from running so fast. Three teens from the connected middle school had invited José to sit with them at lunch, a very unexpected gesture of kindness that had shocked both him and everyone else. These were the cool “grown up” kids, after all. The teens seemed nice, and José felt comfortable enough to the point where he had let slip that he hadn’t always been named José, and had grown up presenting as a girl. That was the moment when everything came crashing down. The three boys started hurling slurs and other degrading phrases at José in front of the entire cafeteria. Worst of all, his own classmates had joined in and

My High School was in rural Maryland this is before I moved to West Virgina for good. You couldn’t take classes there without seeing animals getting slaughtered. Even then, I liked animals more than I liked most people. So, I became a vegetarian. Our one agriculture teacher thought the whole idea of not eating meat was absurd. He was the same man who made us raise chickens from birth, then kill and eat them. I know this is part of life for many people, and I’m not condemning anyone who eats meat. I even eat fish and chicken now just no red meat. But this teacher seemed particularly annoyed by anyone who didn’t eat meat. One day, he was about to kill a turkey in front of the class and called me up to hold it while he brought the hatchet down. I had never done this before, never heard the story of the headless turkey that runs. I held its feet, and when he cut the head, the turkey didn’t run but its wings beat wildly, and blood splattered over my body. Some sprayed on

The Steppe: Chapter 4

That evening, the wolves pursue a herd of horses. As the red sun begins to dip and the thin wisps of cloud cross in front of it, the hoofed quarry falls with sharp death cries. Having pulled down the horse, the pack begins howling again. The cries trace invisible territorial lines through the forest. A shooting star crosses the twilight sky, as if attracted by the chorus of the pack. The wolves howl as the steppe lioness ventures into a shallow ravine with her cubs, as the cave bear family rests at a cold lake, as a leopard sits in a tree with his eyes on a woolly rhinoceros below, as a gray male intruder wolf licks his wounds, as a family of Neanderthals stoke flames at the edge of a small wildfire, as the two male lions sit alongside each other, rubbing their heads together as a sign of brotherhood. When the wolves howl, all of the other creatures look up at the purple skies as if called upon by the distant cries. Unlike all the other animals, the male lions respond.

The Steppe: Chapter 5

Sunset comes on from the horizon. The black female wolf swallows a mouthful of meat and blood before diving into the horse kill for more. All around her, the others in the pack feed on the mare. Their fur coats stained with blood, they ravenously tear organs and flesh from bone. The sun dips below the trees. The cold twilight comes and cold rises from the dirt into her paws. Her brother rips a leg free and runs away with it. An older wolf chases after him, tugging at the leg. The twilight fades, surrendering the skies to darkness. Glancing to her side the black wolf spies the rest of the pack, arriving for the feast. The pale points of eyeshine dance in the dark, loping closer. She turned to face the two wolves who led them to the kill. Mother and Father. They glide in with a bold, forward movement. Right behind Mother comes a tall, slender, red-tinged wolf. She is Nym, Mother’s sister. The black wolf stands aside so her parents can feed. She lowers her head as Father turns to her

Omo Basin: Death Stalks at Night

The next time the thick-jawed ape awakens, he finds the suffocating blanket of night. There is no moon. There are no sounds. It is as if the savannah holds its breath. His fur stands on end, this time from fear. He rises up on all fours, looking around. A breeze whispers through branches. He looks for the female, but cannot find her. He hoots into the air. From somewhere above him she hoots back. The air goes still. The next sound she makes is a cry, a howl of pain. It rips through the air and he screeches in alarm. The smell crosses his nose and knowing what has attacked her, he grabs his handaxe, jumps out of his soft bed and scrambles to the other side of the tree. With a lunge he brings the stone weapon down on the head of the Enemy of the Night. Its claws flash in front of him and he dodges the swipe of its paw. He struggles to track it with his eyes as the large, feline shape slips past him. The ape barely makes out its hunched shoulders and short tail. It floats through the

Zoot was probably asleep in some trees. Dr. Teeth was somewhere and Janice was trying to find him. They have been dating for a few weeks. The white tailed deer was walking down a path in the woods. The path was made by large feline paw prints which means Teeth was here. She stops when she notices something on the ground. It was blood…. Janice felt her heart beating a bit fast. The weredeer’s ears went flat against her head. She slowly kept going. Her tail stays between her legs as she walks. Janice could smell the scent of the blood as she got closer. Then the scent hit her nose. It was a….dead deer. The white tailed deer stops in her tracks as
