A dreamscape that recalls the journeys of McCay's Little Nemo and Friedrich's images of the sublime.

Very cool work, I really appreciate the different types of painting you use, from the painterly clouds to the stark contrast of the waves. The composition is smart, with a low horizon that bows in the center to best suggest the huge weight of that awful sky!

The emotion of the moment might be a sort of horrified awe, a precariousness of situation that allows no room for dread, and instead fascinates the mind upon nothing but the scene which is before it.

Fantastic work.
What the-
It's a nice piece. You seem to have an excellent sense of the big picture "impact" of your artwork.

This is really quite wonderful. The choice of colors in particular is breathtaking. Of special note is the juxtaposition of bright high key colors with low key compatriots. This piece practically jumped out at me from the thumb, and its impact is not dulled much by seeing it larger.

Very moody setting, the silhouette buildings are convincing but really secondary to that amazing light show. I like the little bits of information that reward the closer view, the figure, the "open" sign, street lamps and weathervanes. They're interesting but seem unimportant compared to the big picture.

A beautiful painting, impressive coloring, great sense of mood.

Wow! A real critique, and my first in this nifty format.

--Art Criticism Mode--
Looking at this picture, I am struck by several formal choices and several thematic/conceptual choices. Formally, the large white space from which the face and hand emerge is an arresting image. The lighting that would produce these effects suggests an otherworldliness. This is supported by the spooky birds (nice execution there, btw), and the surreal serenity of the figure's face juxtaposed with what appear to be stitched shut eyelids. The mood it evokes is complicated, because there is so much unexplained in the picture, though it does appear to have meaning.

I think the hand and face have an excellent mix of loose brushstrokes and detail (love that hair). The stitching doesn't come across quite as well as it could, I think. Not that I would even know what that looks like, haha. The robe itself is really great where it obscure the hand and parts of the head, but the other areas are not as nice formally as they could be. Maybe make that into the diagonal it seems to want to be, or balance the amount of robe we see on either side a little better?

Seriously, the facial expression is what makes this. I am impressed and awed by your speed painting skillz.
Red Birds Will Fly
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate you taking the time to offer real criticism. I know what you mean about some of the proportions. This piece is sort of weirdly stylized, so some of that is intentional, and some is probably not. The swords are probably supposed to curve like that, katana varied widely in the amount of curve in the blade.

Thanks again, I rely on you guys to give me honest feedback, hahaha.
