The fall feels so peaceful, until
Written for THE GAUNTLET. Sixth challenge: BREV UP (6 words, exactly.) Write a six-word-story about something abrupt. None of your words may be of equal length, and you must include the word 'so'.

Rules-lawyering: you may think that 'feels' and 'until' are of equal length, but consider this: the challenge never specified a particular measure of length. While they have the same number of letters, dA's default variable-width font definitely renders 'feels' as longer than 'until'. If you wish to fault me on this, please use an actual tape measure.

(Also, I've given up.)

Wordcount: 6.

Great story. Fits the prompt like a glove, and takes us all the way down. :+fav:

Oh good, a thing I'm actually scared of :P (I believe it's Terry Pratchett who noted that it's not as much the falling as the landing that's scary about acrophobia.)

It's not a fear I have myself, but thinking about it now is sure making me uncomfortable. No one likes crash landings.

Hah, nice use of the 'abrupt' part, in both senses!

Only thing I could suggest would have been to use 'seemed' instead of 'feels' - but I appreciate the rules-lawyering regardless. This was the first one I looked when the challenges were posted, since it was short enough to mull over during the day; and I don't think in all that time I ever settled on one I liked that didn't break one or other of the rules either. (more criteria for this one than words in the word limit, I think!)

I seriously considered that, but I think it loses a lot if put into past tense - it takes too much away from the abruptness. (Also I liked the alliteration.)

In the end it pretty much came down to a choice between writing the best story I could and following the rules absolutely, and since I'd already been a bit fuzzy on the rules in earlier Gauntlet stories it was a pretty easy choice to make. That said, I'm still upset with myself for not following them absolutely, finishing all of them, and ending up with nine stunningly brilliant stories. I know logically that the problem is with my expectations rather than my accomplishments, but it's a pretty hard thing to shake. ^^;

I get that entirely.

I could probably have scraped together the rough material I had, and made it to story 6 or possibly 7 - but I hated most of them. When I finally got a good idea for number 1, I went with that - but since I'd sort of built a chain of several linked together stories, that meant so much re-work to my later ones to stand without the original 1, that I decided it wasn't worth it. I made the decision to just post the one story I liked rather than 6 or 7 I hated, and I'm still upset about not finishing the whole thing.

I guess it's always going to be a fine line between writing things you're actually happy with, and ticking arbitrary boxes for the sake of a competition you're no longer enjoying. Personally, I feel it's been a very long summer of that sort of exercise, and something's going to snap somewhere. I'm still catching up on reading through your earlier entries, and I'm sure most of them are your usual superb stuff, regardless of strict rule adherence or otherwise!

Yeah. Between all of these competitions - and especially with the Gauntlet going so badly - I've pretty much hit a point where I can't write at all anymore until I've had a bit of a chance to recover and rediscover my spark. Just trying to ignore the urge to set my hard drive on fire and give up on everything forever until then.

For what it's worth, the story 1 you went with was really excellent in my view. I'd say it's worth skipping out on the rest for that one - better one good story than six or seven forced ones, definitely - but of course, it's much easier to say that to someone else than to internalise it for oneself.

I feel your pain ^___^ In my first go at a SWS, I had 'ruler's' and 'caught' and was going to argue that one was 7 characters long and the other 6.

I do love this though. It's such a great ending - if maybe not for the person falling ^^"

I tried and tried to rewrite this to properly fit the criteria, but everything I changed just made it worse. The 'until' really isn't negotiable.

Even if it doesn't quite follow the rules, I'm definitely glad you enjoyed it!

I thought they meant the season at first. >w<

You know, I was a bit worried that would happen. 'Falling' just doesn't have the same ring to it, though (even aside from it changing the number of words) - and anyway, even if it's not what was intended, it does make sense and work if you read it as the season. I have to admit part of me enjoys having that double meaning in there.
