On November 25, 1942, the Soviet Union launched one of its costliest military failures. A snowstorm grounded air support and rendered artillery blind. Infantry had an average of three bullets per rifle. Some 100,000 Red Army soldiers would be killed and 230,000 wounded in the next three weeks.
