Morganez de Gwened of Dugelezh Breizh (Breton) by Gambargin Morganez de Gwened of Dugelezh Breizh (Breton) by Gambargin
A Concept Drawing of a Celtic Breton Woman Warrior in the Historically Wrong Sketch Series: Medieval Revisited, which is roughly based on the Middle ages covering 800s AD to 1400s AD. She represents the realm of the Breton people, which includes the Duchy of Brittany that exist from the 9th till 15th century.

Inspired by the song: Ar soudarded zo gwisket e ruz by Meldis (Breton Folk Song)

INTRODUCTION

The origin of the Breton people that lived in modern Brittany, or the Armorica peninsula as it was called, came from the migration of Britonic speaking people of Brittania during the 3rd - 9th century. Centuries of interaction with the local Romano-gaul population as well as other Germanic people such as the Franks and the Vikings, has contributed to the devoplement of Breton culture which remains unique and thriving to this day. In the context of medieval history however, Brittany was a fragile land ruled by unstable Breton dynasties and rivalries between its ruling dukes and subjects. Nevertheless, Breton mercenaries were famed for their fighting prowess and prestige, some of which saw action during the Norman invasion of England!

DRAWING COMMENTARIES

Gambargin may have been sad due to recent event, but then again, sadness does not bring productivity. So rather, the energy is better to be used for drawing :D

One of the most interesting part of this drawing is perhaps my experimentation in creating a scenery that contributes an overall story to complement the drawing of woman warrior. Also, I wanted to try to portray a rather light hearted scenes instead of warfare, to create an image that this woman warrior is a normal human just like us, rather than some unrealistic heroine figure

As for the portayal of lady Morganna, she is portrayed in a rather simple 14th century fashion which indicates her humble background or lower nobility. Her helmet is a bascinet based on the collection of Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan, while the scale hauberk and the fashion is inspired from the clerestory windows art of Tewksbury Abbey. The armor incorporate several pieces, which includes a surcoat on top of mail hauberk, with a hardened leather pauldron and splinted metal greaves. As for her armaments, they are based on contemporary medieval artworks, which includes a falchion, dagger and a shield. There's very little celtic elements in terms of her appearance, so I included "the canton ermine" as a decoration to give that Breton flavor

This picture is gold to me. I am writing an historical fiction novel. The Breton spy keeps a bantam rooster with her as she travels. I chose this detail because Morganez here has hold of a hen.

Thank you.

And the knight in background: "M-lady! Forget the bird the enemy is coming!" Love the scene. The little girl is like "I wanna be just like her"

I've nothing but fond memories of Bretagne. Cute villages, great walks on the cliffs or through the forests and past the old stones. I love that you included those neat houses in the background!

Great detail.  Do you choose the type of warriors you draw randomly, or do you like to try to go through all ages and places?

The types of warrior and the age depends on the historical context and the sources which I have available, but generally speaking, I follow the faction map which guides me as to which one to work on :D
