Spiral Staircase by G-FLIP Spiral Staircase by G-FLIP
Timelight Picture Study with Highway Flare
Limited Edition Pigment Print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper. Contact artist at gstubelick@rcn.com for pricing & availability.

When I first came upon this staircase, my mind immediately inserted a spiral running through it.
From that moment I was on a mission to realize the piece.

Given the urban location I knew there was only going to be one chance to pull it off.
i.e. Security/Police.

So, with that in mind I set up my camera on a tripod... Fired up a Highway Flare on a tether... Started spinning & ran through the space... Thus,"Spiral Staircase" was born...

Main Challenges:

Keeping the momentum constant to ensure ring consistency & to keep burning magnesium from dropping on me...

Being mindful of my footing while jumping the stairs on the descent through the stairwell as not no fall...

Time-Exposure on film. No Digital Manipulation. Images come out of the camera as they appear. Work spans 30+ years.

No digital manipulation! This makes this piece part of the few finest light painting works I have witnessed ;) How did you do it? I guess I'm not surprised, 30 years! :D

A great piece of "light art" I admire very much. I imagine someone else held a flare or other light source and you took the photo(s). [?] I also imagine I see a rather ghostly trail of possible footprints going up those stairs. Not sure about that. But I'm sure I like the contrast between reds, oranges, rusts and greenery at the top is terrific. Thank you.

Thanx Much! for your kind words & taking the time to comment... Most Appreciated!
In regards to your questions... It was a solo piece... I was spinning the highway flare while I ran down the stairs...
The feet at the bottom of the rings are mine, which I purposely allowed to happen in order to provide a base or footing (no pun intended) for the rings.
For some pieces I like to have parts of me burn in for documentation or texture effects... I also find that people enjoy looking for ghostings of me in the images... All the Best...G

You're very welcome. :)
I considered the fact you might be the only person involved, but only after I looked at more of your gallery.
I really like that you leave "ghostings" of yourself in the images. That makes it even more unique and fun!
All the best to you, too.

i think the stairs do a very good job of taking the eye further into the picture. i also like the way that the spiral ends out of the shot, so we get the feeling that this could go on for much longer than we can see.

I'm guessing that you must have had the flare on something where you could swing it around to make the light so smooth... I've never seen such amazing professional timelight work before!
