Juliet may come across as menacing and eerie due to her sullen appearance and peculiar interests, but she’s a very caring person. She’s keen on subtle changes in people’s mannerisms as a result of people-watching. Due to the fact she’s struggled with making friends, she’s susceptible to believing in others even if they don't have the greatest intentions. The people that Juliet expresses fondness can be assured that she has their back. She would easily take a hit for her loved ones. She diligently studies for long periods of time during the night due to her insomnia and recurring nightmares; due to this, however, she is incredibly sluggish during the day. Juliet moves slowly and is constantly hunched over.
Likes: having friends, creepy crawlies & the unknown; stuff most find gross/creepy, hugs, Romeo & her father, vegetables
Dislikes: too much sugar/caffeine, mean-spirited individuals, mother's side of family, going out in hot weather, being isolated
History:
[warning: self-harm implied in history + extras]
Juliet Sinclair was the only child born to Diane Sinclair and Ellis Lockhart.
It was a joyous moment, for the couple tackled through many obstacles prior to her birth. Diane Sinclair was a pure-blood whereas Ellis Lockhart was a half-blood; though times have changed greatly, the Sinclairs were severely against marrying those “lower” than them. Blood status and reputation were valued and were not to be tarnished by inferior blood. Despite this upbringing that was ingrained in each child of the Sinclair family, Diane married a half-blood she met in the muggle world. She carried so much potential for the Sinclair name, only to destroy their image with this union. Not wanting to cut ties with Diane, her relatives often attempted to sabotage their marriage and bond but always failed. Eventually, they forcibly moved away from the Sinclairs’ eyes and settled in solitude where Ellis was raised at the muggle world.
Juliet was born in Britain. The Second Witch Trials occured when she was two, but her family kept to themselves in their small home. While nothing had harmed them, it affected them greatly. For a good portion of her childhood, Juliet led a relatively happy life, studying under her mother. She was a bright and diligent child who enjoyed learning and spending time with her parents. She had exposure to the wizarding society, being taken on study trips with her parents. She showed potential just like her mother; her parents hoped to hone her abilities as she grew older. Tragedy struck when Diane passed away when her weak constitution got the better of her, succumbing to illness. Grief-stricken, Ellis had no one to turn to in the muggle world, especially not after what he witnessed during the Second Witch Trials. The Sinclairs approached him as he mourned over his wife’s gravestone, extending a helping hand to him. They would take in the father-daughter duo with a condition: Ellis will work under them and Juliet would study with her cousins at home. Optimistically believing his in-laws had turned over a new leaf, he agreed on it.
Juliet did her best to get along with her cousins. She smiled, she shared her belongings, she was nice; nothing she did appeased them. They were condescending to her, mocking her blood status. They sabotaged her studying notes, stealing her assignments and taking her ideas. Juliet, despite being bright, was muddled by her other cousins who constantly belittled her. Her relatives never believed her; those were their children, after all. Her father was put on odd hours and Juliet could not reach him for most of the week. They call her names and pulled her hair. Not understanding the treatment she was receiving, Juliet demanded to know why they were so mean to her.
“Your mother died because of you.”
After that short explanation, they moved onto tormenting her emotionally. They drilled it into her head that her existence was the reason her mother fell ill and passed away. The very idea kept her awake nights after nights. After the children grew tired of bossing and bullying her, Juliet ended up taking it out on herself. Scars started to show and she hid them behind long sleeves and skirts. Her father took her out to the beach on a rare day off and discovered the burden she was shouldering for nearly a year. Upset at the Sinclairs and at himself, he severed all ties and moved elsewhere with Juliet. In hopes of recovery, he spent more time with Juliet and helping her stop the lapses. It was never Juliet’s fault, he would say, gently stroking her hair. Despite the reassurance she got from her father, she could not sleep in peace anymore, noises in her head screamed at her. At the very least, she was able to stop harming herself. Slowly but surely, she was recovering.
When Juliet was eleven, she received an invitation to Hogwarts. Her father was overjoyed since Juliet was an excellent student but the girl’s hand shook nervously. She wasn’t sure if she could handle being far from her father again, in a setting with other children. However, she wanted to change more than anything else.
previous years at Hogwarts
Juliet spent most of her time being reclusive. Her first two years were the most nerve-wracking, unable to look at anyone in the eyes. She secluded herself in her own space, subjecting herself to studying to pass time and to tire herself. She couldn’t sleep well as always, finding herself crying silently during the nights when she missed her father the most. Her grades were excellent but Juliet, as a person, was not.
As the years passed by, Juliet grew more accustomed to schedule and the notion that she would pass by several faces every day. It was comforting, in a way. A little lonely due to her initial distrustful and reclusive nature, Juliet has yet to befriend any of her classmates. She wishes that this year will be the year that she changes. She sends letters to her father regularly.
stance
Juliet knows very little about the Second Witch Trials. Her father never mentioned it in detail but she got the general idea about it. Due to the fact that she had muggle blood in herself and in her father’s side, she did not think them too ill. Juliet is terrified; she was mistreated for being part muggle by the purebloods, and the muggles persecuted the witches. Was there a place in the world where she could exist as a person? She thinks it’s not possible, but it would be nice if they could be less discriminatory to each other.
Family:
Diane Sinclair: Juliet’s mother. A pureblood with strong magical abilities but had a weak constitution. She passed away when Juliet was around eight years old. Juliet doesn’t remember much about her but thinks of her as a strong-willed and independent woman. Diane helped Juliet with magic as a child but was unfortunately not around long enough to hone her skills.
Ellis Lockhart: Juliet’s father. A halfblood whose optimism blinds himself over the cold reality. He wants to do everything he can to keep his daughter safe but feels that he has failed due to the Sinclairs’ treatment to her. He’s overprotective of Juliet and proudly claims that she is the cutest daughter in the whole wide world, glossing over the mass amount of remarks of how creepy she looks.
Extra:
-Juliet has a particular interest in collecting strange objects. She’d like to use them in a spell or in a creation but hasn’t decided that far. She habitually asks people if she could collect their tears in her vials and also pick up hair strands. Whenever she comes across something weird, her eyes light up. She is interested in the process of death and the decaying cycle. Most nasty things, she has a peculiar interest in. Not very squeamish. She's not aware that she scares people but will apologize once it's been pointed out.
-Juliet and her father took on her mother’s surname to honor her and her alone only. They’re mostly cut off from the main family.
-Juliet's arms (from hands and up to her elbows) and legs (thighs) are covered in scars (from accidents/time during Sinclairs’ or self-inflicted) so she chooses to wear long and baggy clothes to avoid shocking people. She's not ashamed of them as she has changed as a person. However, she doesn't self-harm anymore!! She's on a 4 year streak. She has a scar on her face from when she was staying at the Sinclairs’. She doesn’t really remember what happened.
-Juliet's father cut her hair but messed up really bad but she didn't allow him to take her to a professional. She insisted to keep the style.
-very good at baking simple cookies & biscuits. not good at baking anything else though. Her cooking is average-tasting but looks incredibly disgusting.
-sugar and caffeine don’t really work for Juliet; she’s tried before. If she has too much sugar and/or caffeine, she ends up crashing immediately and will faint.
Relationships:
Romeo: Juliet's pet birb. Her only friend at Hogwarts. They met before she started her third year and was partly the reason why she began to open up to idea of school friends.
