The fylfot is a common element in ancient Greek and Roman art, partically in 'key pattern' which is used as a border design on vases and mosaic floors.

Key Pattern is formed from one or two continous lines that interweave creating repeating patterns of various complexity.  The group icon is an example of Key Pattern.  The name refers to the shapes formed resembling an old fashioned key.

Key Pattern has inspired several generations of architects in the Georgian Classical Period circa 1800 and the Neo Classical Buidlings circa 1900.
