Hey, I used this a little over a year ago (I'm a few comments down) - I was wondering if I would be able to offer my work as a print (on another site). I do have the ability to credit you as the photographer of the swan

Thanks - it was a bit of a fluke... I heard the sound of swans in flight just as we neared a viewing screen around the lake and fortunately they did a couple of flights from one end of the lake to the other so I just managed to get some vaguely suitable camera settings dialled in and get some shots!

How do you like the Bibble 5? Are there any advantages over photoshop?

I initially tried Bibble primarily because I shoot in RAW and use Linux, so I don't have so much choice in terms of raw converters. I started off using the free "ufraw" converter and with GIMP to do additional post work after, but ufraw was a bit clunky. I gave Bibble 4 a trial go and found it good enough to entice me to buy it, and the leaps forward they've made with Bibble 5 are excellent.

I find Bibble 5 pretty intuitive and powerful, with some great plug-ins too. Bibble 5's layers/regions stuff is great for non-destructive selective modification of the source RAW file. Beyond just sorting the initial tone curves and white balance I use it a lot for better balancing the light/contrast/tone of regions of images, and it's also nice to be able to create new versions of modifications to be able to try a few different tweaks and revert back to where I'd got to if it doesn't work out. The region clone tool is surprisingly useful for cloning out undesirable elements of the image (not as flexible as manually cloning with a brush, but very quick to use and often does all I need).

Because it's a raw-converter-on-steroids rather than a full editing suite, I do find I do some post processing with GIMP once in a while, but most of the time Bibble does all I need for post :)

They do a free trial, so my advice would be just to try it!

Thanks for the reply! I looked at it after seeing your photo. The white exposure was beautiful... something rarely seen. I do all my work in raw starting with ACR then moving into PS. I've grown lazy with PS and now use Nik Color Efex Pro for all my modifications. Onone just brought out a Beta layers program for Lightroom. I have the freebee on that, but, so far, see no advantage over PS. I've had PS since 98 and am still learning, but I love variety and 200 USD seems cheap for more fun! Thanks much!

As I've found my D90 tends to, unsurprisingly, overexpose for the detail on animals with a lot of white (swans, cats with white fur) I set the exposure compensation to -2/3EV as a starting point...

Even with the -EV the brightest parts still were a bit blown out at the initial settings when I imported the NEF into Bibble and everything looked a bit washed out, so the settings I tweaked were: I dropped the exposure a little further, put in a little highlight recovery, fiddled with the curves a little to get the contrast about right (I used a Bez plugin which has easy sliders for doing S-curve style contrast/lightness tweaks, and some manual curve adjustment). Then some sharpening with a wavlet sharpening plugin (shutter speed wasn't quite quick enough) and some noise reduction with noise ninja as the shot was at iso 400 and the contrast tweaks had made it a little more evident.

I actually didn't do much in the way of region adjustments on that shot - I just used a region around the eye/beak region to use a more aggressive sharpening setting as the swan's head was moving a little more so a bit more blurred.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with Bibble - above beyond what it has built in it's worth playing with a fair few of the third party plugins - a lot are free or "pay if you like/pay what you feel it's worth".

I love your hummingbird shots BTW :)
