It was incredible, when you really thought about it.
One moment I was a grand being in crimson satin, black lace. The envy of the ladies, and the prime prey to the gentlemen watching. I was the bird, and they the hunters. I was the star in the night.
I didn't hear the piano- it heard me. It followed me. I lounged, I sang. I rang with the applause. I was the belle of the ball and something everyone who came expected to hear. Music flowed up from my pointed toe and into my heart, where it poured from my lips. Fluid in my every move and one with the sound. It was like being a heavenly being.
Especially when the applause came. And the gentlemen tipped. And smiled. And the ladies were green with envy.
Then, fifteen minutes and a costume change later, I was outside on a curb, functional shoes and makeup off, and even the taxies didn't notice me.
In that restaurant, I knew fame.
