“All grown-ups were once children... but only few of them remember it.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
"All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them."
― Walt Disney
Giulia was a very artsy kid. She doodled things everywhere every day, really liked video game characters and used to rave about them every time the teacher asked the students about heir heroes. At 6 years old, she was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. "I wanna be an artist!", she replied. She became confused when everyone laughed. As the years went by, she realised it was because people don't believe in art. It's a lie, according to them, and making a living out of it is a myth. "'Artist' isn' a real job," they'd say, "you should become a doctor or a lawyer". Everytime she mentioned art, someone would give her the "are you kidding" look.
Eventually she gave in. Being good with numbers, she figured she might be better off working with them somehow, because everyone believes in numbers. They're very real and exact! Even so, she found herself struggling to find her place in society. What was she supposed to do in life? 'What is my purpose?' was a question she asked herself every night. Frustrated for not being able to decide her own fate, she became a *shudders* normal person. (you know, the kind that agrees to do what older people say). She stopped "arting" and spent about a year studying Computer Science in college, because "it's the career of the future!", they said. And she, tired of being shut down for being herself, agreed.
One day, she realised she hated studying Computer Science. She hated maths, programming, staring at codes for hours trying to find where the heck she forgot to put the ";". And when that happened, she snapped. At least that's what it must've looked like from others' perspective, because what really happened could be described as an epiphany. "I'm not supposed to be here. I don't need to do what they want me to. I am a free person."
And so she bailed. She caused a fuss. Her family questioned her decisions, but there was nothing they could do; she'd already made her mind.
She decided that it was easier to work hard on something she wanted to do than to try and be someone she isn't. Against all odds, she's striving to become who she wants to be. Eventually, she applied for the Cinema course at the Federal University for a bachelor degree and that sweet possibility to actually create her own TV show. Some days are better than others, but at last she feels like she belongs.
Also, at some point in the middle of all this she realised she wasn't exactly a "she", but might actually be a "they"! That was very confusing for them at first, it took a while to accept that and they're still not sure how to bring that up to those they love most, but at least they know it's not weird to not feel like a girl when you've been told your whole life that's what you are.
Who they might come to love, though... that's a whole 'nother journey.
You may call me Babs. I am an artist.
