I would like to try a much lower poly model with the hair layers and opacity maps, but yeah, for this model I was thinking more of the solid style since it would suit it better with what I'm going for. I'll likely experiment with all three methods in future models though, or possibly use the hair system on this one to see how it works.
And I don't dislike the weight painting as such - I actually started to enjoy it once I figured out why parts of it kept going haywire (always normalise those weights!)
The rigging is only really frustrating since it's hard to find good information on how to do it properly. How to set up twist bones for the arms and legs for example, since currently her hip disjoints if she turns her knee outwards. Like I said though; I'm the maniac trying to do it all from scratch rather than learn how Rigify works, so I brought this on myself ^^;

Oh I was used to Maya as well. Haven't had the chance to use it for years, though.
And my first attempt at Blender a few years ago was a disaster as well. I couldn't figure out the interface at all. Decided to give it another shot a few months ago though, and after some good tutorials I find it's actually pretty intuitive much of the time. It's just got a bit of a steep learning curve, initially.
