The Gestapo was the secret state police of Nazi Germany. The name "Gestapo" is an abbreviation of the German term Geheime Staatspolizei, meaning "Secret State Police". 

"Abwehr" refers to the German military intelligence service, specifically from 1920 to 1944, responsible for espionage, counterintelligence, and sabotage. The term itself is derived from the German word abwehren, meaning "to defend" or "to ward off".
