Eagle Standard Bearer

In the Roman army, the eagle standard bearer was known as an aquilifer (Latin for "eagle-bearer"). This was a position of high honor and responsibility, as the eagle standard, or aquila, was the most important symbol of a Roman legion. The aquilifer was tasked with carrying and protecting the eagle, and its loss in battle was considered a major disgrace.
