Tattershall Castle, UK. This is one of the oldest brick structures in England, dating from 1434. Bricks were novel and expensive at the time. This what wealth looked like in medieval England.

Don't kid yourself...this is what wealth is today too as neither of us could afford buying this little apartment do you think?

My guess is that the reason they built so high rather than out, is for security reasons and keeping the wrong people away if needed. I mean just climbing 6 or 7 flights of stars all day long would be a killer to most people. Nice image.

Lol, good point! The guy who built this was the richest man in England at the time. He was building in a familiar style - the castle - but out of a new material and with wide, low windows that would have made it difficult to defend if anyone seriously tried to take it. It is in that transitional period between medieval castles and Tudor palaces.

I've always loved the historical gifts that Europe has and could have had so many more if not for so many wars of course.
Here in the U.S. we have very little that is old except our current politicians that once slept in that castle you imaged I think. We have no roots or culture either as nothing but foreigners and minorities are running this land that greedy corporations are heading up.
The Brits, Irish, Scotts and so forth at least had class and dignity and brought a more refined culture to the world in spite of the exploitation they pioneered in so many countries. Now the United States has made a science of stealing all the resources from every land and leaving the people that own them penniless and poor. Then we invade and kill every time we get a chance and kill hundreds of thousands while we boast we did it for freedom.
We should bring back the castles I think, except no one can afford the energy bills every month.
