I'm behind in learning about this, but perhaps I'm not the only one.

Evidently the Chinese government has decided that this place is unsuitable for its citizens to access.  > news.deviantart.com/article/65… <

Above and beyond my fondness for the characters, this is just one of many reasons I am a fan of V for Vendetta and Alan Moore.

The story is not just a work of fiction with "hawt" main characters; it deals with very real issues that have happened throughout history and continue to happen to this day.  It is both a warning and a comfort, because although it reminds us of the monstrosities we're capable of, its existence means that at least some places still allow some freedom of expression.

We must not take anything for granted, no matter where we live or how things have been in the past.  We are all responsible for our future.

That totally sucks! But you had to know that sooner or later it was bound to happen. A government like that (one who is planning to eventually take over the U.S.) would strip away all its peoples' rights.

Wow, I was behind in learning about this, too.... glad you mentioned it, because otherwise I wouldn't have known...

It makes me REALLY hesitant to support anything that will benefit the Chinese government. Somehow, the lack of any announcement just makes it that much worse.

Eurasia is at war with Oceania. Eurasia has Always been at war with Oceania, you know?

Well that's just cherry. So many governments are so high-strung on banning thigns that don't need to be banned. Hopefully the ban will be lifted, like the journal mentioned?

That's just it, though - DeviantART does "need" to be banned anywhere that outside influence is not desired. There are people from all over the world here, each with countless ideas and idealogies. Because of that, it threatens any entity that only allows its own viewpoint.

That's the catch-22 of banning any kind of art, literature, science, religion, etc.; it becomes impossible to differentiate between "protection" and "suppression". And conversely, because people will always work to foil such measures, it also severely blurs the line between "liberating" and "criminal" acts.

Ach, don't mind me... my mind tends to run in circles when it comes to things like this.

No no, don't apologize. You're entitled to your opinion.

The thing is, though, you can't have it both ways. Either it all needs to be banned or none of it needs to be banned. What I don't understand though is how some governments (the Chinese in particular) have such a habbit of banning things that don't necessarily need to be banned. Just because there may be a few pieces of offenseive material on DA doesn't mean that the majority of it's wonderful works need to be banned.I don't know.

......

Well, I guess you'll be keeping up to date on this.

It'll be one hell of a bore if I go back. On the very limited bright side, this means that I can probably write something in utter seclusion, which might work out.

You can never tell what's wrong with stuff these days...

they've had it banned it for years now...it just happens that they've "officially" banned it  it's a sad fact of life... and some are fortunate enough to hack it

To be honest, I was surprised at the number of Chinese artists here, given their government's crackdowns on information access. One can only hope for more workarounds to get past this latest round. :hmm:
