TinEye, Google Images, and detecting art theft

I've long wished for the ability to find an image online based upon the actual image rather than a verbal description, ever since I first started seeing friends' journals talking about art theft.  Now it seems technology is catching up a bit.

The first program/page I saw a while back was Tineye ( www.tineye.com/ ).  It's still under development, but it searches for instances a particular images is found online - including crops, recolors, etc.

Google Images also lets you find pictures based upon actual images now, if you enter the URL of a specific file.  It's kind of interesting in that it goes on to look for "similar" works and shows them as well.

In either case, I'm curious as to how effective these tools really are in finding unauthorized use of artwork.  It seems like either one could be helpful, depending on the circumstances.  TinEye is still archiving, and it seems to be a slow process ("slow" being a relative term, considering how many trillions-or-more images there are out there, to say nothing of the terabytes of information!)  It's possible to register collections of images as a means of establishing ownership, which sounds interesting and yet flawed.  What little I saw on their site assures that the submissions remain the property of the person/company submitting them and not TinEye, but one wonders how they establish ownership beyond the registrant's say-so.  :-/    Google Images may or may not have the same shortcomings; I've no idea.

So far (*knocks on wood*)  I haven't seen any of my own stuff anywhere it shouldn't be, though I admit I haven't done a thorough search through everything I have.

Is there anyone out there whose work has been stolen who has tried using either of these search tools?  I'm very curious to know just how well they work (or not).

To combine or not to combine

I actually have three accounts here on dA, but I neglect two of them horribly.  One is for photos I've taken during our travels that I thought were neat enough to share.  The other was intended to be a showcase for :icongaliowhoop:'s and my Etsy store.

I check in to this account every day almost without fail.  The others... maybe once every several months. OTL   It's especially bad where the Etsy account is concerned, because that's one that could theoretically be bringing in a bit of money if I were actually taking care of it.     Also, this account is a paid one, while the other two are freebies.  I think that's part of the reason I neglect them; I get spoiled with the interface on this one.

Combining everything into one account would definitely make it easier to track everything, although it would be deliberately blending my fandoms with RL.  I've managed to avoid that for several years, and I don't know that I'd want to change that.   There's stuff I've drawn and written that I'm not sure our Steampunk clientele would want/need to see, and I don't know that my Fandom-based watchers would be interested in photos of waterfalls.  xD

*sigh*   I think I just need to get better about logging in to our other accounts and just take care of them, already.  At least for now, anyway.   Much as I'd like to think I can just throw them together into one pile, I'm not sure the separate audiences for each element would blend into the other areas at all well.  :-/

I have ideas, but lack time and confidence to implement them. x-/  Work is sapping most of my energy, even though the hours aren't particularly difficult - I'm under a tight deadline, working on two major projects until late September.   Part of the issue is that it's the height of Summer, and I'm doing a lot of work in a less-than-air-conditioned space.  It's easy to get physically tired quickly, without really having done much. xP   The other part is that my role involves a lot of organization and crew management, which can be just as tiring as physical labor without the satisfaction of being able to actually see what one has accomplished.  Mind you, things really are progressing well at work; it's just taking all my time and focus to do it and I really wish I had about 20% more capacity right now.

I've got some lovely grey drawing paper, all sorts of blank art cards, an ongoing mega-fic and a writing bingo card just waiting for me to come play with them.   I want to, but I don't want to be trying to quickly sneak in a drawing or paragraph while trying to make sure I get my job done.  On the other hand, it may be beneficial for me to just start scribbling things as quickly as I can, just to keep my thoughts moving and out of any procrastinatory ruts.

Argh.  I suspect I'm going to get very little done online over the next couple of months.  ;_;

Topicality's icon challenge is officially over, and the response was overwhelming - so much so that she had to end it early!

She originally expected several hundred people to respond, which would have resulted in a couple hundred dollars (for which she was prepared).  In all, over 4500 people changed their icons to dancing cats for charity.  :omg:  :w00t:

Read her update here:  fav.me/n157227

Boosting the signal here to say that Topicality is doing an awesome fundraiser for the ASPCA.  For every person who changes their avatar to Dancing Bznz Cat and replies on this journal entry -> topicality.deviantart.com/jour… , Topicality will donate 50 cents to the ASPCA to prevent animal cruelty.

Here is the news article explaining it: fav.me/n156966

AfraidI kept holding back,
From standing under that doorway,
Because I was afraid...
Afraid of ruining something good in my life,
And afraid of rejection.
I have a piece of what hung from the door frame,
Will I use it?
Will I put it on a shelf, never to be used?
Will I carry it around until my courage becomes stronger than my fear?
Or will I throw it out because I am afraid of what it could cause?
I was so afraid of getting my heart torn apart again,
I stopped doing something I had started,
Putting myself in a shell,
Reluctant to come out,
And hating myself for retreating there in the first place.
Why is it so hard to open up my heart?
Is it because of what I am afraid of?
Or is it because I may have forgotten how to open the door?
To all those questions,
I have no answers.

The only reason she would stop was to sleep so that her abilities could renew and she would not overdo herself.
Grace, a young novice who had just arrived at the temple, wondered at the sight of the angel and inquired to know what she was doing.
"This was a portal to another realm, which was broken during the war.  My beloved Orius and I were separated when this happened, for he was helping those that dwelled over there.  I have been here every day since, putting this as it was before it shattered."
"And how many days has that been?"
"Two thousand, four hundred and forty-two."
Grace's eyes widened.  "That's a... very long time."
Athela nodded with a small smile.  "Yes it is, but each day brings me closer to completing my task and reuniting wit

PSA: Driving and Distraction

(O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O)

I watched someone nearly die yesterday.

We were on the way home after vacation, driving on the interstate.  We were in the left lane passing a semi.  A small Geo-ish hatchback was in our lane several car-lengths ahead of us.

As we watched, the small car drifted into the left shoulder of the road and its left wheels caught in the uneven surface, making it swerve counter-clockwise toward the median.  The car's driver tried to correct, bringing the car back onto the road but fishtailing out of control as it returned to the pavement.

At this point, the small car was still in our lane in front of us, and nearly in front of the semi in the next lane.  We were all still traveling forward at about 40 mph at this point, down from 70 mph.  The small car was now spinning.

It spun to the left, skidding across the grass median separating the Westbound and Eastbound lanes and continuing across into oncoming traffic on the opposite side.  Somehow - somehow - the people coming the other way managed not to hit it, and it continued its spin all the way across the road where it landed in the grass behind a guardrail.  Miraculously, the driver managed to keep from flipping the car over during the whole incident and looked to be unharmed as we passed.

If we had been following that car more closely - if we'd been following at a distance I see others follow us all the time - we would have been caught up in that accident.   If we'd been texting or talking on the phone while driving, which we both see people doing all the time, we wouldn't have reacted in time.   We would have smashed right into the other car as it lost control, and possibly hit or been hit by the semi that was right next to us.  It would have happened at 70 miles per hour.

For that matter, if anyone behind us had been following too closely, they would have plowed right into us when we hit our brakes while the other car lost control.  And if the people in the oncoming lane (I counted at least three) had not been paying attention, they would have slammed into the car as it spun across their section of the road.  A crash involving cars moving in the same direction is bad enough, but a head-on crash from opposite directions is that much worse.  Assuming the smaller car was still drifting forward at at least 30mph as it entered the opposite lanes, and oncoming traffic was traveling at 70mph, that collision would have occurred at 100 miles per hour.

If.   If, if, if.    Countless nasty possibilities, hinging on whether or not everyone involved was observing a safe following distance and paying attention to something besides him or herself.

Here's the rule that helped keep anyone from dying yesterday:

When the car ahead of you passes an object, you should be able to count off two (2) seconds before you pass the same object.  If you cannot do this, you will hit the vehicle in front of you if it stops suddenly.  It is not a question of luck, or skill; it is a matter of pure physics.  If you violate this rule, you are putting yourself and others at risk of injury and/or death, to say nothing of being an utter jackass.

Believe me, a boring day when no one dies is a much preferred thing.

I missed updating last week, so it's fitting to have more than ten pieces on this last entry (or so I tell myself ;P)

I'm showcasing pieces I've favorited that have fewer than 1000 pageviews.
THE AWESOME, LET ME SHOW YOU IT. :iconsmile--plz:

Rorschach with a unicorn by UnusualJuggernaut  Rorschach with a unicorn by :iconunusualjuggernaut: UnusualJuggernaut

Seriously, what could be more awesome?  xD  I think what I like most about this (magnificently crack-tastic) piece is that it is done with care.  The unicorn's body is excellently foreshortened and lifelike, and Rorschach's pose is perfectly typical.  It encapsulates the Watchmen fandom's capacity to successfully incorporate crack, therefore I like it very much.  ;)

Rorschach by Archonyto  Rorschach by :iconarchonyto: Archonyto

Another excellent portrait.  There's a terrific sense of lighting and mood in an image that was executed with such speed .

Rorschach by pm9402  Rorschach by :iconpm9402: pm9402

Brooding, in living color.  Rorschach lends himself very well to "thinking" poses, and this is no exception.

Rorschach_01 by tomisaksen  Rorschach_01 and
:thumb200160328: Rorschach by :icontomisaksen: tomisaksen

This artist created an awesome 3D digital rendering of the character.  Check out the website link to see more views of it!

:thumb201090421: Hone and Strop  and
:thumb205746345: Just Pleased to See Ya by :iconstealsthyme: StealsThyme

This artist tells amazing stories with her work, both visual and literary.  I love the command of anatomy (don't laugh, Lio!) and the painterly coloring style of her work.   Her dA gallery is just the smallest taste of what she's created, and I hope she posts much more here (hint, hint...)

Rorschach Lives by oleolah Rorschach Lives by :iconoleolah: oleolah

I like that I can see the lines of Rorschach's features through the ink in the mask in this, and the brushstrokes in the trench coat lend it a great sense of texture.  All the fabric folds in this are terrific, really, as is the blurred background in cold colors.  It has a great mood overall.

Hallelujah by Smutch Hallelujah by :iconsmutch: Smutch

Simple, graphic style with an interesting composition.   It's one of those pieces that looks deceptively simple, until one really looks at the choices in shape and shading.

Haunted Doorway by initialaitch  Haunted Doorway by :iconinitialaitch: initialaitch

If you haven't read the graphic novel, you will not get this joke (and if you haven't read the graphic novel, WHY ON EARTH NOT OMG).  If you have read the GN, this will either be hilarious or conniption-inducing.  Either way, good times.  xD

RiG: A Lump on the Sofa by tranimation-art RiG: A Lump on the Sofa by :icontranimation-art: tranimation-art

I know :icontranimation-art: got frustrated with this piece, but I really like it.  Rorschach's face (particularly his eyebrows) almost perfectly match Jackie Earle Haley's portrayal, and the AU this piece belongs to is fascinating.

Rorschach.. by kova107  Rorschach.. by :iconkova107: kova107

I. Love. Gritty portraits of Rorschach.  This moment is about as gritty as one can get.  The extreme angle, barest hints of color (except for the blood) and the implication that he's looking up at the viewer through a surveillance camera make it excellent in my book.

:thumb118113373:  Walter by :iconsubterranean-hepcat: Subterranean-Hepcat

Taking a quote from the graphic novel, this is a rare view of the man behind Rorschach, and the toll this life takes on him.  Extra impressive to me because it's a color traditional piece.

This City is Afraid of Me.. by remember321  This City is Afraid of Me.. by :iconremember321: remember321

White charcoal on black pastel paper (mmm, one of my favorites... ;D ), making excellent use of contrast to bring out the noir aspects of the character.

Rorschach and Niteowl by AAA968 Rorschach and Niteowl and
watchmen by AAA968 watchmen by :iconaaa968: AAA968

The linework and sense of action in these (particularly the first one xD) are what caught my attention.  There is such care in getting costume details right, and a definite sense of humor. ;D

...And there we have it!

Thank you for accompanying me on this ride, and for checking out these artists' work.    I hope you had fun!

Green/purple/orange color scheme, just like in the GN.  Nite Owl facing the brighter side, Rorschach looking at the dark... I love it.

Rorschach may not care for how he looks beneath his face, but Walter's features are fascinating.

you had no choice by radishface  you had no choice by  radishface

(Why yes, I am a slash fan! xD )  Aside from that, I love the attention paid to Walter and Dan's features - Walter's short nose and frown, Dan's height, the difference in their jawlines, brows and hair.  I love the sense of lighting that's achieved with so few simple shapes placed in just the right spot.

The first 9 people to comment here get three things from their gallery that I choose as a feature. Anyone who does this has to re-post this in their journal with me as the first spot.

So, yeah, pretty self-explanatory. :)  I'll post thumbnails and try to put together a blurb like :iconcatandcrown: did, because that seems like a good thing to do. ^_^

1. :iconcatandcrown:
Pieces: VS Elina: Runway Rumble by catandcrown   Let No Joyful Voice Be Heard by catandcrown   Cats, Books and The Holy Lance by catandcrown
Thoughts: I've been following this artist for a while, and it's really been fantastic watching his style evolve into rich, self-contained stories.  Digital art has always fascinated me in the way things I don't think I'll ever grasp often do, and :iconcatandcrown: has plenty in that realm (as well as traditional art!) to enjoy. :)

2. :iconrazor9350:
Pieces: Beast V.2 by Razor9350   Rorschach cosplay by Razor9350   My 2nd Sonic character: Blade by Razor9350
Thoughts: I think my favorite thing in this gallery is the original characters.  Not only are they drawn with personality and given active poses, but their stories are told in the Artist's Comments to give the viewer an insight into whom they are.  And of course, how could I resist the Rorschach cosplay! ;D

3. :iconskysongma:
Pieces: Iron and SnowThey say New  York is beautiful this time of year.

It covers dirty streets
and graffiti
and homeless men that nobody took inside.
Everything is smeared with white,
its truth gone,
like a chalkboard after lecture ends.
I ask what it looks like in spring,
When the buildings stand raw and unprotected
And the trees stretch barren, skeletal fingers to a sun that doesn't yet nourish.
They tell me to think less morbid thoughts.
It was snowing the night you died.
Did the flakes fall on your face?
Did you catch them on your tongue?
Or did you just put your hands in your pockets
And hunch your shoulders against the wind
And never once think that you were a target,
That your life was numbered in seconds, not decades or years or even days…
That every step took you farther away from the life you knew.
And I think of your body, broken and still.
And I think of what is left of myself.
And I think…
I think the best part of me lies ble

I love that you are alive.
I love that each breath I take contains a little bit of you,
and of me,
and of every person who has ever lived.
I love pressing my hand to my heartbeat and knowing you feel the exact same thing.
I know you don't believe me.
You can't even consider the possibility.
And deep in your heart you doubt anyone—
not just a perfect stranger,
but people who know you down to your last neuron—
can really love you.
Do you know what else I know?
I know that it isn't true.
You are precious.
You are beautiful.
You are handsome.

The Dead GodThe room was large, quiet, and empty, and it smelled like death. It should have smelled like weathered stone, or dust, or moss that grows forgotten in dark places so long it forgets its name, but Rat knew death. He had tasted it the moment they walked inside this ancient church, and he longed to adjust and stop smelling it.
He wished he could walk closer to the three adults behind him, but he would get in trouble. He wasn't a scrawny child today; his job was to walk carefully and take the brunt of any traps he triggered so the adults would be all right. They were needed, after all: Theodora and the silent man had the magic, and Flim was a miner. And Rat... Rat was looking for stairs. Those stairs went down a hole flush with the floor, invisible until Rat almost tripped into it. He caught himself, and his fingers clenched around his light stone. It was a long way to fall. Rat swallowed hard before calling back. "Here!"
Flim started for Rat and his light, but Theo lingered, studyi

Thoughts: Literature!  Possibly the most challenging of Deviations simply because it requires the viewer to go in and have a look rather than offering an instant visual thumbnail.  I challenge everyone to make a point of reading more Literature offerings, and begin with some of SkysongMA's.  :gallery:

4. :icona-chemical-vendetta:
Pieces: The World is Built Atop This by a-chemical-vendetta   Left Overs by a-chemical-vendetta   shadows by a-chemical-vendetta
Thoughts: A traditional artist, using graphite, ink, and paint along with photography.  I really like the contours and attention to detail in chemical-vendetta's drawings, and the "Leftovers" painting series is fun with its sense of speed and motion, making interesting use of what most people would disregard.  I saw mention that this artist has other works that are being displayed elsewhere - I hope they'll be scanned in here eventually! :la:

5. :iconmrs-matsuyama:
Pieces: Creature of the Night by mrs-matsuyama  :thumb172547076:   What's This? by mrs-matsuyama
Thoughts: Beautiful animal photos, and color on black paper.   mrs-matsuyama has a knack for capturing interesting moments, as well as some excellent luck (as with the butterfly picture).  Her subjects are given a wonderful sense of character, and the process shown from step to step is as interesting as the final product.  :sherlock:

6. :iconlethianu:
Pieces:
Thoughts: Music and theater permeate this gallery and its many stories.  A fan of both "V for Vendetta" and "Phantom of the Opera" (those two fandoms seem to attract one another! ;D), :iconlethianu: is a compellingly prolific creator of musicals, poems, adventure sagas, and original characters. :sing:

I would ask anyone who currently does business with Heavy Ink to seriously consider whether you wish to continue doing so.

Almost like "Freedom of Speech" doesn't equal "Encouraging the assassination of elected officials".    Although technically, he is still free.  His firearms license has been suspended (with the option for him to appeal) and he was not arrested.  So the tinfoil hat contingent can just simmer down.

Christmas Elf Wishlist :)

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 14, 2010, 6:53 PM

V mask emote by FugueState :rorschach by Gomotes :rorschach by Gomotes V mask emote by FugueState

O|O O|O O|O O|O O|O O|O O|O O|O O|O

The lovely :iconsaniika: does a spiffy thing for Christmas:  Rather than have a "Secret Santa", she's put together a sort of Pay It Forward event in which one makes a list of things one wants, and also tries to fulfil others' wishes.  I'm late to the party, but here goes! :)

Step 1.

Make a post in your dA journal (the manual INCLUDED). The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real-life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Step 2.

Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

Step 3.

The list:

1. Inspiration for my Muse  :3

2. A dA subscription

3. Help - in any form - to someone who asks for it.

4. A decently-paying, fulfilling job for my other half.

5. Rorschach, Nite Owl, or both in fanart.

6. For Joe Sjoberg ( find.joeismissing.com/ ) and anyone else who's missing to be found safe.

7. Some new, happier-yet-not-saccharine music to explore.

8. Another opportunity to cosplay Rorschach. xD

9. A donation (money, supplies, volunteering) to a no-kill animal shelter.

10. A trip to an amusement park with friends. :)

A young man named Joe Sjoberg is missing from the Madison, WI area.

Here is a link to the missing person flyer:

docs.google.com/document/d/1W_…

And here is the Facebook page his brother has set up:  www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=g…

He's been missing since Monday night, Nov. 30th.  His family is extremely worried.  Please have a look, even if you don't live near Madison, and please help boost the signal.

Thank you.
