Muddy Mole - Old and New

Back in 2004, I started the Nintendo Stars section on NinDB, where I posted Nintendo character profiles along with self-penned artwork. Some of these were pretty lazy. Muddy Mole from Mole Mania was one of them, and yet this image started showing up all over the place. IGN even used it in one of their "Smash It Up!" feature. uk.ign.com/articles/2007/10/06...

Anyway, I decided to update it!

Looks very legit. Great job recreating it.

Wow, you originally made that? I thought it was official artwork originally!

Regardless, this is simply amazing! I'm a big fan of your style.

Thanks :) My style was definitely inspired by Yoichi Kotabe, who was the artist for the old Mario games and indeed Mole Mania. Perhaps the most influential artist in my life.

I suppose that is how I mistaken it for official art. It's pretty darn close to his style.

Here's hoping for a 3DS Mole Mania, the system is perfect for it. Hopefully Miyamoto will consider it after he completes his new Wii U ip.

I said back when the Nintendo DS was announced that it'd be perfect for a Mole Mania remake. Above ground on the top screen, underground on the bottom. I'm just not sure what puzzles they could come up with. Mole Mania was huge!

Nice, this one looks more accurate, and more like Yoichi Kotabe's artwork for the game. :) (But with a bit of your own style mixed in.) Great work on Muddy Mole. That game needs ALOT more love. Got it on my 3DS, and it's great.

I beat it for the first time just a week ago. I tried to make it as close to the official drawing style as I could, but then I like to do my lines and colours a certain way :)

That's cool. :) It's a great game, it kinda reminds me of Zelda, and Gameboy Donkey Kong (the 1994 supersized remake) combined kinda. (Makes sense, considering Mole Mania was made by Shigeru Miyamoto, I hear.)

I must add, I always liked Yoichi Kotabe's artwork for Mario, and Nintendo games. (It was even a slight influence on my own drawing style, among other styles.)

Same here. Yoichi Kotabe is easily the most influential artist in my life, even if I didn't know who he was when I was a wee nip :)

Yeah, I always wondered who made the art for the old Mario & Zelda games, and such back then when I was a kid.

Nice always like to see people look back at their old works and give them a makeover.

It was fun. I don't think I could do many of the other poses as they were too simple or too... broken.

Awesome! Love your style!

You're welcome!

By the way, have any idea on what you're next? I have a few suggestions!

I draw what I want when I want to, unless it's a specific project. I don't really have time to take requests these days.

Ah okay, thanks anyways!

Some kick ass improvement over almost a decade. I approve this!

Why thank you, Jig!

Dude, I really like the updated look you gave to Muddy! Looks a lot better than the old one. I have Mole Mania in my 3DS, and I think it's a really good game!

I tried to keep it on model this time, but with the original pose I gave him. I'm rather pleased with it :)

I played Mole Mania on a friend's Game Boy Pocket back when it came out. I love it, but I've never beaten it. I've set myself a challenge to beat it soon :)

I haven't beaten it either, especially because some of the puzzles are incredibly difficult.
