Normally I’m fine with talking about the comics with a spoiler warning up top, but this comic’s a little different. You really don’t get the full flavor unless you go in with a little mystery.
So instead of reviewing the comic plot-point for plot-point, I want to talk about the main theme: dark destiny.
So many tales focus on the destiny of the hero. The one who is meant to rise up and become the savior. Luke Skywalker. Harry Potter. Twilight Sparkle. But for those heroes to rise, doesn’t that also mean that someone is destined to fall? That they have to become the villain if only to set the stage? Do you think the heroes would be half so proud of their destiny if they understood what it cost?
Enter Fiendship is Magic #1, staring King Sombra’s origin. Though the comic introduces the concept of choice, I think Sombra is more a product of his surroundings, like many historical and fictional individuals.
