Sleep Paralysis. by Friday-13th Sleep Paralysis. by Friday-13th
'Sleep paralysis is a condition in which someone, about to drop off to sleep, or just upon awaking from sleep realizes that s/he is unable to move, or speak, or cry out. This may last a few seconds or several moments. People frequently report feeling a ' presence ' that is often described as malevolent, threatening, or evil. An intense sense of dread and terror is very common. The presence is likely to be vaguely felt or sensed just out of sight but thought to be watching or monitoring, often with intense interest, sometimes standing by, or sitting on the bed. On some occasions, the presence may attack, strangling and exerting crushing pressure on the chest. Many perceptions are associated with SP, such as visual illusions, visceral buzzing, loud sounds, adrenal mental state and presences.'

Inspired by 'O Pesadelo/The Nightmare' painting by Henry Fuseli: [link]

I wanted to make it look like an old painting. I couldn't find any demon or gargoyle photo stock which could fit so I didn't manage to represent the demon sitting on the chest and had to place a shadow in the background instead.. This theme has been on my mind for a long time because I've been experiencing many periods of SP and I've have some sleeping troubles as well since I am about 9, I think sleep paralysis is a terrifying and yet fascinating experience and it's still leaving me confused.

Last night I woke up from these terrible nightmares I get very often. I can't remember everything, but I always feel someone next to me. It's so scary that I feel the presence of this man of my nightmare; his cold hands, his voice in my head, even the smell. It lets me think I'm beconing mad. I just hate this sleep paralysis, but your work is very beautiful!

i know how you feel i have SP episodes almost everynight and sometime about 5 times a night and its just horroble and to me it happens with any sleeping possition so in a way i never feel safe when i go to sleep.
just the feeling of not being able to wake up, more or even scream scares the hell out of me.

Amazing work!
I've experienced sleep paralysis several times over the past few years, more particularly when I was exhausted and fell asleep on my back. I have learned to avoid sleeping on my back altogether, but there are the rare occasions that I end up doing it... Well if I find myself paralysed I try to move but there's no use in panicking too much. I know that I will not be able to get up for a while. You are slowly able to move yourself a bit more until your body is working right again. It's not that something is weighing on you, it's more like your body is still asleep and it's heavy as lead so you can't move it. It's just that you really cannot move, the most you can do is twitch your fingers and slightly raise your head. I don't know about inability to speak, because I never tried to speak or cry out while paralysed :) I just kind of wait until I can move again.

Just...don't sleep on your backs when you're freaking tired guys!!

I know this all to well...having an inability to move, fighting to, but nothing! Also having chronic Fibromyalgia makes sleeping difficult.
Great details and lighting,
Love it!

This has happened to me many times, the weight I feel on my body when I'm paralyzed is very heavy, it is absolutely terrifying. I would ordinarily believe the common scientific reasons but that doesn't explain the very heavy weight on my body and the amount of fear I feel. I feel certain there is a dark presence in the room when it happens, it's a demonic force I'm sure.

I suffer from SP, and for the past 2 months it's happened to me 6 times. I can say from experience it is the most terrifying thing I have ever felt, it usually starts with a dream that escalades into a buzzing sound and the "mind-awake but body asleep" feeling, you breathe deeply and try to yell, scream do anything to get help.... But you can't. You cannot move nor flex your vocal cords enough to make anything more than a "hmmph". I feel as though I'm slowly running out of air and a heavy weight has been placed upon my chest and I can't push it off. I lay motionless except for the few times I manage to twitch a finger or move my eyes. Scared to death I pray for it to be over, struggling feeling no end to the firm hold that constricts me. My heart begins to race the sense of Fear grows somethings happeneing... And then.... seemingly out of the blue, as if a switch has been flipped, I increasingly regain control of mobility, Gasping for air and nearly falling out of bed I feel drained and weak, but alive. The thought of the experience is not bad when you think back about it but when you go through it its Hell. 24% of people will experience it once in their lifetime, lucky me I get to go through it God knows how many more times, there is no cure. The worst part of it is that it is believed to be associated with "SUND Syndrome" or Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome which theoretically when all your muscles are paralized including your cardiac muscles and diaghpram, stopping you from breathing. So you get to sit there paralized, awake alone in the dark and watch as you slowly run out of air and suffocate as if you have forgotten how to breathe.

I had to comment on your comments. I've had this experience before! It was my Great Grand Father as I was awakining. It scared me SO!...not for anything he did or anything, but just because I knew he was dead. I was trying my BEST to scream and woke myself up trying; with my mouth opened and nothing coming out but air.
Trying to run, I couldn't move. It was so real!

I'm glad to know there is a word for it, and that I'm not the only one.

Thanks..Joey

Oh!....Fantastic peice too.

I love your work Darling. The amount of details and "clin d'oeil" is amazing, as the hidden hand behind the couch ... You have a great talent for show up human disorders. I have suffer for years about this sleep paralysis. It was more when I fell asleep while a trip in car. I remember so well yelling and yelling but I was not able to open my mouth. And I was alone with this because nobody wanted to believe me  Despite my age now, I am still very afraid to have again this paralysis. I have still some scared things when I sleep ...
