"Ralts swapped abilities with its opponent!"

This is an illustration I did for Game-Art-HQ's Pokémon Generation 3 collaboration - and boy is it busy already with people sweeping in for spots!  Both of their previous projects were great fun to be a part of and so fun to see everyone's interpretations of various moves, so I felt very happy to go in again and see what I can send in for those first seen in the Hoenn region!  If you're interested, there's a journal right here:
Our POKEMON Generation III Tribute (210/270)
Like announced, we start our Pokemon Generation III earlier than the previous 2 and you can claim your first pick right now!
The rules are for the most part the same as last year.

We illustrate the Pokemon without a background and use the .png format for them, so we have a transparent bg. The main theme is also to illustrate each Pokemon while it is performing one of its attacks, moves, abilities. Similar as in the 3 examples from last year.
The moves don't have to be from Generation III but since we are tributing Gen III, it would be awesome if you can pick a Gen III move or ability.
Here is a list of all Gen III Moves: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Category:Generation_III_moves
Every artist can pick up to four Pokemon but only one at a time.
We got the previous two Art Collaborations done before Christmas and I hope we will be able to publish the Gen III Tribute again at Xmas.
If you pick a Pokemon today

So yeah, Ralts.  In Generation III, its final form of Gardevoir made the most passionate fans declare it to be their waifu; but before all that, it's just a small white Pokémon that senses human feelings.  In Little Cup conditions, it's not as great to use as other Pokémon of its type and is only really useful to set a revenge Arena Trap on Diglett.  But for those that want to carry one through an entire story run, it's very difficult to find in the wild but is rewarding to use once brought up to its max potential.

One trend that also started in this generation was moves that swap the Pokémon's traits with the opponent.  In the case of Skill Swap, that would mean swapping abilities with the opponent - another new thing that was added in the third generation to add more strategy.  Some Pokémon are immune to ground type moves with Levitate; some can't be put to sleep because they have Soundproof; those with Guts gain more physical power from getting burnt / paralyzed / poisoned, etc... lots of useful things that'll throw a spanner into the works.  But Skill Swap can be used to negate it - you can take *their* ability and pass them *yours* in return, opening another door to attack!  Seriously - taking Guts, burning the foe and burning *yourself* due to them having Synchronize is clearly asking for trouble :P

I wanted to capture more of a dream-like effect, as the Ralts is drawing in energy from its opponent and passing it on to another - hence the "Beefcake Ralts" vision and seeing it become stronger as a result of taking a nice ability for itself.  The direction with the psychic energy actually changed from sketch to colored image; it was to be a purple aura with its glow lighting the top of its head, but then I remembered it moved along by means of different colored balls in generations 3 through 5.  Because of the color of Ralts's head, I went for the color scheme that appeared in gen 4 / 5 with the yellow, white and blue orbs as seen here.  Smudging the balls was a crude method to do as there's no clear resources on curving motion blurs from what I could see, but with all the masking I did, it seemed to come out pretty nice anyway x)

You can see the sketch version as an entry in my 365 sketch challenge for 2018 from a few weeks back as well.

Great artwork of Ralts. Love the "beefcake" vision it's having. :XD: Also, those orbs from the Skill Swap look pretty cool here. :)

Thank you x) I just wish modern art programs have an option to path your motion blurs as a vision like that would be made so much easier.

(Also, Hinoka is best Hoshidan girl - just saying :) )

The ability 'Trace' is extremely useful both in game and in competitive play (even if I don't do wifi battles lol).
Lovely work drawing Ralts btw!~ <3
