This is an illustration I did for Game-Art-HQ
Generation 3 collaboration - and boy is it busy already with people sweeping in for spots! Both of their previous projects
were great fun to be a part of and so fun to see everyone's interpretations of various moves, so I felt very happy to go in again and see what I can send in for those first seen in the Hoenn region! If you're interested, there's a journal right here:
Our POKEMON Generation III Tribute (259/270)Entry 14 had me going back to Feebas after its cameo when I drew Carvanha, but now it's doing a move of its own! This little fish has parallels with Magikarp in that it's a complete polar opposite to its evolution - and in this case, Feebas is seen as one of the ugliest Pokémon while its evolution Milotic is seen as the most beautiful. Its speed stat of 80 gives it a good advantage in Little Cup conditions, but its move selection and other stats mean it's not really viable to use in battle - but with the right nature, it can still tear up the Beauty themed Pokémon contests!

What I opted to draw for Feebas is Mud Sport - a very good defensive move for solo water types as a whole. Any Pokémon that has access to it via leveling up or by breeding can use it to cut the base power of electric type moves in half, therefore cutting back on one of two of its most major threats. In Generation III, Feebas can only learn the move if its father is a member of the Mudkip family that already knows it.
Remembering a certain scene from the first chapter of Winnie-the-Pooh, where said character would roll around in a mud puddle to impersonate a rain-cloud, I felt it make a lot of sense to interpret Feebas getting muddy in a very similar way. This was one that required more color balance as well, wanting me to try and hit the delicate balance between clearly seeing its natural colors and clearly seeing it get covered in this icky mud. I also had to improvise on how to shade the mud - most examples I saw ended up shading it in a very basic way, and you know I'm one that's all for texture and seeing how that pans out in a bigger picture! But yeah, all turned out well, and here's to this mud bath taking Feebas on one more step to becoming beautiful. This image got an Inktober twist yesterday as part of my 365 sketch challenge for 2018.
