With Action Comics 1000 and his 80th year anniversary, my feelings about his classic costume resurfaced since Brian Michael Bendis and DC Comics returned the character to that goofy red trunks look to celebrate his milestone. So i asked a deviant named umbatman to redesign a tasteful and cool Superman costume that reflects the times yet keeps the core essence of the character intact and he came up with not just one but five cool looking designs and that was impressive, considering he's not a big fan of Superman.
Let's just hope that DC will change their mind and POV and move the character and his mythology forward with the times. That goofy classic costume design only reinforces the notion to Marvel fans and non comicbook people that DC is the home of "Your grandparent's superheroes" and why some people find Marvel characters more cooler i think. They have this thinking that superheroes wearing trunks over pants is goofy and dated and not cool and yeah i can totally agree. From a design standpoint, it's impractical and a fashion eyesore. So i hope that to my deviant followers who are fans of the character that you don't take this redesign attempt as an affront but rather as a way to evolve the character with love and care.
Any worthwhile concept and IP has to move with the times to remain relevant and not be forgotten. Adapt or perish. That's a fact of life. If Superman's contemporaries like Captain America and Wonder Woman have gained renewed popularity and acceptance thru various media like movies, cartoons and games and have moved with the times, then why can't the very first superhero yes? I think it's a disservice to the character if this attitude of ICONIC REVERENCE hampers in the way of much needed character development and evolution to the character just because he has worn that classic costume for so long, that the DC creatives don't want to progress the character for fear of backlash from fanboy purists. Because in their minds they think that it's "sacrilegious" to tamper with his design, never mind that it's goofy and dated. And fanboys come up with the stupid excuse of "Real men wear trunks". Oh really? Why don't you try doing what you've just said and tell me if it doesn't feel silly and embarrassing?!" It's this narrow and closed off mindset that irks me and will be the death of characters like Superman.
Anyways, please do check out umbatman's DA page and spread the Superman design post to your fellow deviants and friends. He will greatly appreciate all that support and hopefully this will get DC's attention. If not, at least we've tried and that's all anyone can do.
