Despite his past association with The White Fang and Cinder Fall, he is rarely if ever surprised by things. A trait which is rarely seen among his particular type of Faunus. He is detached emotionally and quite aloof preferring to keep to himself at any time if he can help it befitting his alias. Unlike previous and/or current employers, Mifune displays a strict code of honor and will uphold it regardless of who questions him to do otherwise. Unlike Roman Torchwick or Mercury Black, He will maintain an air of professionalism and sophistication when speaking to employers, clients, and even targets with a respectful if distant manner.
He can at times be quite selective about how much effort will actually be put into the jobs he is hired for but will complete them nonetheless. In battle, however, he becomes a merciless killer attacking with deadly strikes all poised to eliminate the target quickly and effectively. He will not attack a target that cannot properly defend their selves. His reason remains unknown but most attribute it to an unspoken code on the matter.
Unlike a majority of the Faunus populace within the land of Remnant and its four kingdoms, Mifune has no care or interest for the civil disputes between man and faunus. If need be he will kill either without remorse as long as he is paid to do it. To him, killing is just the consequence of conflict and you either kill to survive or kill for its own sake. This point of view as given him a very jaded and cynical outlook on the world.
Befitting his feline-faunus traits Mifune is a highly agile combatant with superior reflexes. However, due to being of the Panthera tigris species he also possesses extraordinary strength able to lift full-grown men off the ground with no effort.
He is a skilled huntsman that always strikes with killing intent. He has killed several White Fang with only ever needing to draw his aikuchi. When arriving at a designated meeting point set by Cinder Fall the White Fang foot soldiers on sight mistook him for a hunter attacking him. The scuffle ended in a matter of minutes as Mifune countered several attacks and cut them down without even having to look at them. His skills allowed him to fight both Mercury Black and Emerald Sustrai on fairly equal footing with the usually confident Mercury lamenting the faunus was merely “playing with his food”.
Mifune’s true talents lie in his extraordinary swordplay as shown by his weapons of choice; An aikuchi named Lady Snowblood and a High-Caliber Nodachi named Shere Khan. He is usually seen carrying the aikuchi more often though as he saves the nodachi for ones worth the trouble. In combat, he utilizes Iaido with both weapons with uncanny speed and ferocity but prefers to use a naturally aggressive kendo style. His skill and strength border on inhuman even by faunus standards due to the sheer size and length of his weapon as well as its unorthodox firing mechanic which should tear his arm off from the recoil yet he wields it as if it were a smaller sword.
His semblance dubbed as The authority of truth is activated by channeling his aura through his eyes generating an eerie glow. Its primary ability is that it can predict one’s movement and their next action through their individual preparatory actions. Its possesses a passive ability that allows Mifune to find the structural weakness in anything within a given time.
White Fang: Although not much is known about his history with the White Fang as a group he has nothing but disdain for them. Citing them as a mistake and its founders as misguided fools. Nonetheless current members new or old know of his reputation and credit him as a dangerous warrior they actively avoid making an enemy of.
Blake Belladonna: In their past, the two shared a mentor-disciple relationship teaching her how to fight and eventually a brother-sister relationship. Blake doesn’t talk much about him and was greatly saddened to hear him working with Roman Torchwick. Indicating a once great deal of respect and admiration for the aloof faunus. Mifune, on the other hand, is proud of her for the woman she grew up to be. Blake seems to be one of the few people Mifune genuinely cares for.
Mercury Black & Emerald Sustrai: Mifune hardly gives the duo the time of day. He ignores Mercury’s insult and sarcastic comments while he keeps Emerald from being able to swipe anything off his person. While has no love for the pair he remarks some mild concern for the paths in life they have chosen.
Neopolitan: The two are usually seen in close proximity of the other but never actually interact outside of mild gestures. However as noted by Cinder the two want nothing more than to fight the other. As a result, the two share a begrudging respect for the other even if they don’t show it. Over time Mifune shows rare kindness to her for her genuine loyalty to Roman
Cinder Fall: The two share a strictly professional relationship. Mifune is simply hired muscle for her plans and Mifune complies. Cinder may dabble in the occasional sultry flirting with him he remains taciturn. Mifune, on the other hand, keeps his guard when addressing her as unlike other employers Mifune next to nothing on this new employer. After the attack on Beacon, Cinder’s rise to power, and the White Fang’s involvement he ended their contract out of disgust.
Adam Taurus: Like Blake, the two shared a mentor-disciple relationship before the two became like brothers. Over time as The White Fang became more dogmatic in their goals the relationship between the pair only soured until the two parted ways on bad terms. Adam stills hold some respect for his killing prowess. Mifune has nothing but disdain for Adam.
Qrow Branwen: One of the few humans Mifune calls friend. Since Qrow’s Team STRQ days the two have been heated rivals trying to outdo the other in combat. These bouts had to be mediated by Summer and Taiyang respectfully. Although much time has passed between the two they still hold the other in high esteem.
Raven Branwen: Like Qrow she is one of the few humans he calls a friend. Unlike Qrow his feelings for her extend beyond friendship showing her in his unique way affection. Although the feeling wasn’t reciprocated he still has strong feelings for even years after they’ve lost contact with the other.
His first name comes from the famous late Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune and his notable roles portraying samurai films most notably as Sanjuro Kutawabara in Yojimbo and Musashi Miyamoto in Hiroshi Inagaki’s Samurai Trilogy. His last name “Murasaki” is Japanese for Purple befitting his color motif.
His personality and semblance are inspired by The Hermit (IX), the ninth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks. It is used in game playing as well as in divination.
The Hermit represents retirement from the outside world, introversion into the inner self, listening to the inner voice and caring for the inner self. He requires retreat from any ‘high life’ and loud company and stands for a time of self-reflection and self-realization.
His semblance alludes further this by both its name “Authority of truth” and its ability to “see” the world.
Looking at his personality and worldview Mifune is meant to represent the negative aspect of The Hermit which includes; Numbness, loneliness, bitterness
The color scheme is a nod to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure main character, Joseph Joestar and his stand, Purple Hermit.
The names of his aikuchi and nodachi are named after notable fictional characters
His aikuchi, Lady snowblood is modeled after the weapon used by the Kill Bill character, O-ren Ishii portrayed by Lucy Liu. The name itself comes the book and main character of the same name, Lady Snowblood which served as the basis for the Kill Bills.
His nodachi, Shere Khan derives his name from the central antagonist of the same name from The Jungle Book as well as Mifune’s faunus species.
The mechanic behind the sniper nodachi comes from Samuel “Jetstream” Rodrigues from the Metal Gear franchise who uses katana also employed a trigger function to draw is a sword with devastatingly blinding speed. Sam’s weapon was shorter and used an M14 Carbine for the gun aspect whereas Mifune’s weapon is longer utilizes a Barret M82 for the gun aspect.
His rivalry with Qrow is similar to the one between Red Hair Shanks and Dracule Mihawk respectively. Even more evident given the type of sword they use and personalities.
